Michel Calls For Aggressive Play From Girona Ahead Of Champions League Clash With Liverpool

Ahead of their Champions League match against Liverpool, Michel urges Girona to adopt an aggressive mentality. Despite a winless streak, he believes they can compete effectively.

Michel has called on Girona to adopt a more aggressive approach against Liverpool in their upcoming Champions League clash. Girona, who secured third place in LaLiga last season, are currently experiencing a four-game winless streak across all competitions. They sit 30th in the Champions League standings, three points shy of a play-off spot after five matches.

Liverpool, in contrast, have maintained an impeccable record in the competition and are at the top of the table. Girona have yet to face an English team, but Spanish clubs have struggled against them recently, with no wins in their last seven encounters (three draws and four losses) since Real Madrid's victory over Chelsea in April 2023.

Girona's Michel Demands Aggression Against Liverpool

Michel emphasised the importance of aggression both with and without possession. "We want to see an aggressive Girona with and without the ball," he stated. "They dominate the game. I prefer to have the mentality of winning the ball back as quickly as possible." He stressed that fans should create an electrifying atmosphere to inspire the players.

Liverpool stand out as the only team with a flawless record this season, having won all five of their matches so far. The Reds have been dominant, winning their last ten group/league phase games, scoring 28 goals while conceding just three.

Michel acknowledged Liverpool's strengths and adaptability. "They dominate all the concepts of the game," he said. "Their game is very dynamic; they change structure at any moment." He noted Liverpool's ability to win duels and defend effectively when needed due to their aerial strength.

The Girona coach reflected on his past experiences and aspirations. Michel nearly faced Liverpool during his time at Rayo Vallecano when both teams reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 2001. He expressed his long-standing dream of competing against Liverpool: "It means a lot to me."

As Girona prepare for this significant match, Michel remains optimistic about their chances despite acknowledging Liverpool's formidable form. His focus is on ensuring Girona plays to their strengths and delivers their best performance.
