Midfield Battle Is Crucial For Newcastle United's Champions League Clash Against Marseille

Eddie Howe stresses the importance of the midfield in Newcastle United's upcoming Champions League match against Marseille. With key players like Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon, the team aims to secure a vital win.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe emphasises the importance of the midfield in their upcoming Champions League match against Marseille. The Magpies have secured victories in three out of four games this season, placing them sixth in the standings. Meanwhile, Marseille sits just outside the play-off spots with three points. Howe believes that controlling the midfield could be crucial to their success.

Bruno Guimaraes has been instrumental for Newcastle, matching Joshua Kimmich with nine passes breaking the opposition's defensive line in the Champions League. Only Atletico Madrid surpasses Newcastle's 32 defensive line-breaking passes this season. Howe anticipates a challenging atmosphere at Orange Velodrome and stresses the need for technical proficiency in midfield.

Newcastle's Midfield Focus Ahead of Marseille Match

"We have travelled early; we will train at the stadium. Tomorrow our preparation will be slightly different," said Howe on Monday. "The most important decision is how we play. The midfield battle will be key for us; we need to do well technically with the ball."

Anthony Gordon, who missed recent matches against Manchester City and Brentford due to injury, might feature against Marseille. Gordon has contributed directly to five goals in four Champions League games this season, second only to Victor Osimhen's six contributions. Alan Shearer holds Newcastle's record for goal involvements in a single campaign with seven during 2002-03.

Howe shared updates on team news, stating they are buoyed by their result against Manchester City. "We are good, boosted by the result against Manchester City. Team news-wise, we are similar; we welcome back Dan Burn from suspension. Anthony Gordon and Emil Krafth have travelled with us; Kieran Trippier hasn't."

The upcoming game presents a significant challenge for Newcastle as they aim to maintain momentum in the Champions League. Howe acknowledges the difficulty but remains optimistic about their chances. He notes that playing in a vibrant stadium can enhance their performance if harnessed correctly.

This fixture is crucial for both teams as they strive for success in Europe's elite competition. With strategic focus on midfield dynamics and key players returning, Newcastle hopes to secure another victory and strengthen their position in the group stage.
