Midtjylland Defeats Celtic 3-1 As First-Half Collapse Costs O'Neill His Initial Match

Celtic faced a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Midtjylland in the Europa League, marked by a poor first half that saw three goals conceded. Martin O'Neill's return ends in defeat as Celtic struggles continue.

Martin O'Neill experienced his first loss since rejoining Celtic as they fell 3-1 to Midtjylland in the Europa League. The Danish side capitalised on a poor first-half performance by Celtic, scoring three times in eight minutes. Martin Erlic, Mikel Gogorza, and Franculino Dju each found the net, maintaining Midtjylland's flawless record in the tournament.

Midtjylland started strong with Franculino, Kevin Mbabu, and Mads Bech all threatening early on. Cho Gue-Sung forced a great save from Kasper Schmeichel before hitting Anthony Ralston in the face with his follow-up. The breakthrough came when Erlic headed home after a corner was recycled in the 33rd minute.

Midtjylland Beats Celtic 3-1 in Europa League

Just over a minute later, Gogorza doubled the lead. He skilfully manoeuvred past two defenders and curled a shot around Schmeichel into the far corner. Franculino capped an impressive first half by scoring four minutes before halftime, lifting his shot over the crowd into the top-left corner following a long throw.

In the second half, Midtjylland eased off slightly but remained dangerous. Celtic managed to pull one back in the 78th minute when Erlic fouled Callum Osmand in the box. Reo Hatate converted the penalty confidently into the bottom-left corner. However, hopes of a comeback were dashed when Lee Han-Beom blocked Michel-Ange Balikwisha's attempt shortly after.

The match statistics highlighted Celtic's struggles away from home. They have now failed to win any of their last 15 major European matches on foreign soil, drawing five and losing ten since November 2021. During this period, they have conceded 40 goals.

Celtic allowed Midtjylland to take 15 shots before halftime, nine of which were on target. Overall, Midtjylland had 22 attempts with an expected goals (xG) value of 2.49 compared to Celtic's five shots worth 0.98 xG, largely due to their penalty.

This defeat highlights ongoing issues for Celtic in European competitions away from home. Their inability to secure victories continues to be a concern as they seek improvement under O'Neill's leadership.
