Mikel Merino has been excluded from Real Sociedad's squad for their LaLiga opener against Rayo Vallecano. This comes amid ongoing speculation about his potential transfer to Arsenal. Negotiations between Sociedad and Arsenal are reportedly underway for the Spain midfielder, who recently played a part in Spain's Euro 2024 victory.Sociedad head coach Imanol Alguacil confirmed Merino's absence from the 24-man matchday squad for Sunday's game against Vallecano. "We worked with the idea that we would count on him, but I decided to leave him out of the squad," Alguacil told reporters at his pre-match press conference.Merino has been a key player for Real Sociedad since joining from Newcastle United in 2018. He has made 242 appearances and helped the club win the 2019-20 Copa del Rey. His potential move back to the Premier League seems imminent, though nothing is finalised yet.Alguacil shared insights into Merino's situation, stating, "He told me that he was ready to help. He wanted to be on the pitch. We are the ones who are here." The coach added that there are ongoing talks with other clubs and that this decision is best for everyone involved.Despite being left out of the squad, Merino remains committed to helping his team. "I don't know if I'm optimistic about him. I know more or less what he wants, but we don't know how those talks will end," Alguacil said. For now, Merino is still with Real Sociedad but will not play on Sunday.
