Paulo Fonseca expressed his disappointment with Milan's defensive performance in their unexpected 2-1 loss to Parma on Saturday. The match saw Milan conceding a goal within the first 83 seconds, courtesy of Dennis Man.
Although Christian Pulisic equalised just after the hour mark, substitute Matteo Cancellieri secured Parma's victory late in the game. This defeat marked Parma's first win over Milan in Serie A since March 2014.

Fonseca acknowledged that Milan must improve defensively to succeed this season. "I'm disappointed. It's difficult to explain our defensive attitude. It's clear that we have a defensive problem," Fonseca stated during a press conference.
He emphasised that the issue is not limited to defenders but involves the entire team's collective and individual defensive efforts. Milan had better chances throughout the match at Stadio Ennio Tardini but struggled with accuracy, managing only five shots on target out of 17 attempts.
Parma, on the other hand, matched this number with eight fewer attempts. Milan also underperformed their expected goals (xG) by 1.01, missing three significant opportunities and hitting the woodwork.
Fonseca was puzzled by his team's lacklustre display despite good preparation during the week. "The team works well during the week, I think I see improvement in view of the match," he said.
However, he noted that conceding an early goal set a negative tone for their defensive behaviour throughout the game. Parma's success rate in duels was 54.4%, compared to Milan's 45.6%.
This statistic further highlighted Milan's struggles during the encounter. Fonseca pointed out that losing possession too easily allowed Parma to create chances despite defending deep.
Fonseca stressed the importance of working as a team to address these issues. "We behaved badly defensively in all moments of the match," he added. He identified problems with attitude and preventive marking, as well as defensive recoveries not being executed collectively.
Milan's underwhelming performance left Fonseca taking responsibility for the team's shortcomings while recognising the need for significant improvements in their defensive approach.
The defeat serves as an early challenge in Fonseca's tenure with Milan, highlighting areas that require urgent attention if they are to achieve their goals this season. The coach remains optimistic about addressing these issues through teamwork and better defensive strategies moving forward.
