Paulo Fonseca has highlighted the need for Milan to strike a balance between their defensive and offensive play. In recent matches, Milan showed defensive strength in a 0-0 draw against Juventus but struggled offensively. Conversely, they were vulnerable at the back during a 3-2 Champions League victory over Slovan Bratislava. Despite leading, they conceded twice and faced pressure for an equaliser.
Milan are trailing Napoli by 10 points in Serie A, although they have a game in hand. Fonseca is eager to address these issues before their upcoming match against Empoli on Saturday. He noted that while they were organised against Juventus, they excelled in transitions against Slovan. "We improve in one area, then other problems arise," Fonseca remarked.

Milan's recent form has been inconsistent, with only one win in their last four league games. They have failed to score in their last two Serie A matches at San Siro, drawing one and losing another. The last time they went winless in three home games was between February and April 2021. Facing Empoli could be an opportunity for Milan to close the gap at the top.
Fonseca emphasised the importance of balance, stating: "It's not easy in Italy to be dominant; it's not easy against Empoli." He wants the team to create chances while maintaining defensive security. In Bratislava, after taking a 1-0 lead, there was an opportunity to control the game, but conceding an equaliser disrupted their momentum.
Midfielder Youssouf Fofana is crucial to Milan's strategy but is on four yellow cards. Another booking would result in a suspension for a key match against Atalanta next week. When asked about resting Fofana as a precaution, Fonseca said he couldn't risk it because "tomorrow is the most important game."
Fonseca expects Fofana to play wisely despite the risk of suspension. "If Fofana makes mistakes, he makes mistakes," Fonseca stated, adding that he hopes others will avoid errors. Milan's track record against Empoli is favourable; they've won six of their last seven encounters (D1). This match could help them regain momentum and confidence.
The focus remains on addressing weaknesses while building on strengths as Milan aims for consistency and success both domestically and internationally.
