Mizo boy becomes youngest footballer to ink deal with nike
Aizawl, Apr 11 (UNI) In a significant achievement for Mizoram football young Mizo footballer David Lalrinawma has signed a prestigious contract with sportswear giant NIKE to become the youngest Indian footballer to have signed such a big deal.
David, a 14-year-old Mohun Bagan Academy student, will be the brand ambassador of the global company for the next three years. He would be paid Rs 1 lakh per year, plus the expenses for training in football.
David has been described by a national paper as a ''rising star of the Indian football'', who can surpass Baichung Bhutia. His striking skills drew the attention of many, including Manchester United authorities, when he was playing for Mohun Bagan in the Manchester United Premiership at Man U's Old Trafford last year. He also showed skills in matches he played in Bangkok.
The son of R Thangkhuma, a high-ranking government official in Mizoram, David was first picked up by Tapan Roy, head of the Mohun Bagan Academy.
''I am very happy. My life has changed after joining the Mohun Bagan Academy,'' he said.
Earlier, NIKE had signed such a contract with Bhaichung Bhutia for seven years which ended in 2005.
