Mkhitaryan Determined To Score In Second Leg Following Controversial Offside Decision

Inter's Henrikh Mkhitaryan reflects on a disallowed goal due to a marginal offside call and expresses his commitment to scoring in the upcoming Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan of Inter Milan expressed disappointment over a narrow offside decision that denied him a goal in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. He believed he had secured a 4-3 lead for Inter late in the first leg, but the goal was disallowed due to a marginal offside call confirmed by the semi-automated system.

Mkhitaryan reflected on the disallowed goal, saying, "I feel very gutted... maybe it was two or three centimetres, but you cannot do anything. Maybe I rushed to go offside, I wanted to score this goal too much. This is football—I have to score in the second leg, that's it."

Mkhitaryan Aims for Goals in Second Leg

Inter faced challenges during the match, including losing their captain Lautaro Martinez to injury at half-time. Mkhitaryan hinted that Martinez might miss the second leg. Despite these setbacks, Inter remains optimistic about their chances in the upcoming match.

The game saw Marcus Thuram scoring within 30 seconds, setting a record for the fastest goal in a Champions League semi-final. Denzel Dumfries then doubled Inter's lead before Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres brought Barca back into contention.

Barcelona displayed resilience as they equalised twice during the match. Yann Sommer's own goal levelled the score after Dumfries' second goal had put Inter ahead again. The thrilling encounter ended in a 3-3 draw, matching a record for the highest-scoring draw in a Champions League semi-final.

Dumfries' Standout Performance

Denzel Dumfries earned recognition as Player of the Match for his contributions, becoming the first Dutch player since Wesley Sneijder to both score and assist in a Champions League semi-final. Reflecting on his performance, Dumfries said he was proud of his efforts and looked forward to the next game.

Mkhitaryan acknowledged Barcelona's skillful play and noted that Inter had led for 20 minutes but faced intense pressure from their opponents. He emphasised that playing against such a talented team is challenging but expressed confidence in Inter's ability to improve.

This match marked only the third instance where Inter failed to secure victory after leading by two or more goals in a Champions League game. Previous occurrences were against Borussia Dortmund in November 2019 and Benfica in April 2023.
