Luka Modric has explained his decision to join AC Milan, citing his wish to remain in Europe and continue playing at a high level. After 13 successful years with Real Madrid, Modric signed a one-year contract with Milan. The Croatian captain left Madrid as a free agent, having secured 28 major trophies, including six Champions League titles and four LaLiga championships.
Modric's impressive performance during the 2024-25 season saw him make 57 appearances for Real Madrid, contributing to 13 goals with four goals and nine assists. This was his highest number of appearances since joining from Tottenham in 2012. His involvement in goal contributions was only surpassed in the 2021-22 season when he had 15.

Despite being linked with clubs like Inter Miami, Al-Nassr, and Inter, Modric chose Milan to make an impact. "I wanted to stay in Europe, to continue playing competitive football. I had some other offers but when Milan showed up for me, it was clear from the first moment," he stated.
Modric joins a Milan team that finished eighth in Serie A during the 2024-25 season, missing out on European competitions. This marks only their fourth absence from European football this century. "Milan cannot be satisfied with average and need to have the biggest goals possible, to win titles, to compete with the best teams in the world. That's why I am here," Modric expressed.
Modric attributes his longevity in football to his passion for the game. "The most important thing is the love for the game, for football. That's what I still have, what I still feel in my belly, this fire, that's what pushes me," he shared. He emphasized that there are no secrets beyond passion and love for football.
His competitive debut for AC Milan could occur on August 17 against Bari in the Coppa Italia round of 64. Following this match, Massimiliano Allegri's squad will begin their Serie A journey against Cremonese six days later.
Modric remains driven by ambition and success: "I'm never satisfied; I always want more. When you've experienced that feeling (of winning), you want to feel it even more." His hunger and desire continue to fuel his career as he embarks on this new chapter with AC Milan.
