Mohamed Salah Could Play Into His Forties After Liverpool Exit, Says Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has stated that Mohamed Salah could continue playing into his forties following his departure from Liverpool. The former boss highlighted Salah's professionalism, work ethic, and recovery standards, suggesting the forward could extend his elite-level career beyond the conventional peak years.

Liverpool are preparing for life without Mohamed Salah after agreeing to let the forward depart at the end of the season, yet Jurgen Klopp is convinced the Egypt captain can keep performing at elite level and play on until the age of 40.

The decision follows contract talks last year, when Mohamed Salah signed a new two-year deal, but Liverpool confirmed earlier this week that both parties had now reached an agreement for Salah to leave Anfield once the current campaign finishes.

Salah could play into his forties

During nine years on Merseyside, Mohamed Salah has built one of the greatest Liverpool careers in modern times, lifting the Premier League twice, adding the Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, while also driving the team through several title races.

Salah has featured 435 times for Liverpool in all competitions so far, scoring 255 goals and registering 119 assists, placing the forward third in the club’s all-time scoring list behind Ian Rush, with 346, and Roger Hunt, with 285, underlining a sustained level of production.

In the Premier League, Mohamed Salah has produced 284 goals and assists combined, a tally bettered only by Alan Shearer with 324 and Wayne Rooney with 311, and 47 of those contributions arrived last season, equalling the competition’s single-season record.

That record haul matched Andrew Cole’s 1993-94 total and Alan Shearer’s return the following season, confirming Salah’s position among the league’s leading forwards across eras, even before considering the trophies collected and the decisive goals scored in tight title battles.

Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah Liverpool departure

Jurgen Klopp, who signed Mohamed Salah from Roma and worked with the forward for seven years, believes the player still has several seasons left at the top and suggested the Liverpool chapter should close on positive terms for both sides.

Salah is an incredible professional, Klopp told BBC Sport ahead of a Liverpool legends charity game. He set completely new standards for a professional football playerhow hard you can work, how much you can invest in recovery and everything. Now, he leaves here, but I would not be surprised if he plays another six or seven years. I'm sad, but he's an all-time great without a shadow of a doubt, and I'm really proud to be a part of that career.

Future options for Mohamed Salah after Liverpool

Attention now turns to where Mohamed Salah plays next after Liverpool, with the Saudi Pro League long reported as a strong option, while clubs in MLS and the Turkish Super Lig have also been mentioned as possible destinations once Salah’s long spell at Anfield ends.

This season has brought more difficulty for Mohamed Salah, who scored heavily in the 2024-25 campaign but has managed only five Premier League goals so far, putting the forward on track for the lowest league return since signing for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp view on Liverpool timing with Mohamed Salah

Salah also clashed publicly with current Liverpool head coach Arne Slot in December, after being left out of the starting side for three straight matches, and the incident increased outside debate regarding whether the club and player might soon separate.

Asked whether it felt like the right time for Liverpool to move on, Klopp said: It's not for me to make that decision, but I think it's right that there's an agreement. I really think the whole relationship was a fair deal. An exceptional player, exceptional numbers, and he earned some money, of course. And now he can go wherever he wants, and the club will find other players, and that's absolutely okay. After all these years, there should be no bad sentiment at all, and as far as I'm concerned, I can't see any.

With Liverpool planning the next squad and Mohamed Salah weighing offers from Saudi Arabia and elsewhere, both sides appear set to end a nine-year partnership that produced major trophies, records and consistent goals, while Klopp maintains that mutual respect should shape how this era is remembered.
