Mohamed Salah Remains Capable Of Competing In Top Leagues After Liverpool Exit, Warnock Asserts

Stephen Warnock asserts Mohamed Salah can continue at Europe’s elite level after his Liverpool departure. Despite a two-year agreement ending with a free transfer, Salah’s prolific scoring and consistency could see him join another top club, potentially in Europe or beyond, with Warnock emphasising his mindset and fitness as key strengths.

Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025-26 season, yet key figures believe the forward still belongs at the highest level of European football. The club confirmed that Salah’s new two-year contract, signed in April, will run its course, with reports indicating the 33-year-old Egypt star is then expected to depart on a free transfer.

Salah’s spell at Anfield stretches back to 2017, when Liverpool signed the forward from Roma. Since then, Salah has become the focal point of the attack, helping the club win two Premier League titles and the Champions League, while also emerging as a central figure for both Jurgen Klopp and current head coach Arne Slot.

Salah can still play in top leagues

The Egypt international has played 435 matches in all competitions for Liverpool, scoring 255 goals and collecting eight major trophies. In the Premier League era since 2017-18, Salah leads the division for goals with 189, assists with 92, open-play chances created with 534, total shots with 1,104, shots on target with 480, and 2,717 touches inside the opposition box.

Within Liverpool’s all-time scoring charts, Salah sits third behind Ian Rush on 346 goals and Roger Hunt on 285. Salah is also fourth on the Premier League’s all-time scoring list with 191 goals. For Liverpool in the league alone, Salah’s 189 goals and 92 assists in 310 appearances represent the most combined goals and assists for a single club in competition history.

Former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore expects the team to move on successfully despite Salah’s departure, though believes the forward’s place in club history is secure. "Liverpool will be just fine [when Salah leaves], Moore told Stats Perform. I'd say, look, it's a storied history club. [Mohamed Salah] is certainly in the top 10."

Moore framed Salah’s legacy alongside several former Anfield icons. "But when you're talking, and my generation, and I'm a little older than the average fan, you go back all the way to Ian St. John, Roger Hunt, John Toshack, Kevin Keegan. Michael Owen, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard. I mean, there are a lot of players who have delivered magnificently throughout their entire careers for Liverpool. Mo is up amongst all of that, and he is absolutely a legend. But this is not a situation where you can say he's the greatest player ever, because that's not the case."

Mohamed Salah Liverpool future and career statistics

Since Salah joined, Liverpool have regularly challenged Manchester City for domestic honours, often pushing Pep Guardiola’s side in close title races under Klopp. Although Liverpool missed out on several league crowns by narrow margins, Salah’s output and consistency were central to those campaigns as the club maintained elite standards in England and Europe.

Salah’s next club remains undecided. His agent has stated there is no agreement in place, yet links continue with the Saudi Pro League, where major stars have moved in recent seasons. A possible transfer to Major League Soccer has also been mentioned, while staying in Europe with another leading side is not ruled out.

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, who played for the club between 2002 and 2007, believes Salah can still compete at the highest club level. "Mohamed Salah is the biggest footballer in Africa, Warnock told Stats Perform. So, bringing someone of that level into the Saudi Pro League puts eyes on it. It makes it interesting. We know they've got the finances as well to be able to do that type of deal. Whether he feels that that's enough of a challenge for him or whether he wants to continue in Europe, whether he wants to try and go to the MLS, we're not sure. The interesting thing is, I still think he can play in the top leagues. I think he's still capable."

Warnock highlighted how Salah’s durability has shaped the forward’s career workload. "I think the big thing with Mohamed Salah is over the course of his career, because of how successful he is and how good he is and how robust he is, he very rarely misses games. He hasn't really had a break, and you just feel given a break. What would we see from Mohamed Salah? Would we see a fitter, stronger Mohamed Salah, even though he is very fit and strong at the moment? But does he just need a little bit of a break, mentally and physically, just to recharge the batteries and then come back even stronger next year?"

For Warnock, mentality remains a decisive strength in Salah’s profile wherever the forward plays next. "But the one thing that you can never question about Mohamed Salah is his mentality and his desire to prove people wrong, and I'm sure leaving Liverpool Football Club, and wherever he ends up next season, he'll try and break numbers whichever football club he arrives at."

As Salah approaches the final months of his contract, Liverpool prepare for a future without a player who has shaped the club’s modern era. The forward’s records, trophies and influence under Klopp and Slot are already secure, while debate now centres on the next chapter of a career that continues to attract strong global interest.
