Mohamed Salah To Depart Liverpool After The 2025-26 Season

Liverpool confirm Mohamed Salah will leave Anfield when the 2025-26 campaign finishes, ending a decorated nine-year stay. The forward agrees with the club that the current season will be Salah’s last, despite signing a two-year extension in April, and will now focus on driving Liverpool’s push for a Champions League place and possible European title.

Salah’s departure means Liverpool lose the club’s third-highest scorer of all time, with 255 goals and 119 assists from 435 appearances in all competitions. Only Ian Rush, with 346 goals, and Roger Hunt, with 285, sit above Salah in the historic standings for the Merseyside club.

The Egypt international joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 for a reported 36.5m fee and quickly became central to the team’s rise under successive managers. During nine seasons at Anfield, Salah collected eight major trophies, including two Premier League titles and Liverpool’s sixth Champions League crown in the 2018-19 campaign.

Salah’s impact in the Premier League era has been both collective and individual. The forward claimed two Premier League Player of the Year awards, with the most recent coming in 2024-25, when a standout season in front of goal helped Liverpool secure a 20th top-flight title and restore domestic dominance.

Salah’s numbers in the Premier League for Liverpool set several club benchmarks. The forward has 281 goal involvements in the competition for the Reds, made up of 189 goals and 92 assists. That tally is the highest by any player for a single Premier League club, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s 276 contributions for Manchester United, which included 183 goals and 93 assists.

Across all Premier League clubs, Salah’s 284 goal contributions place the Liverpool attacker behind only Rooney and Alan Shearer. Rooney finished with 311 contributions, while former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers striker Shearer recorded 324. Salah also matched the league’s single-season goal involvement record last season, registering 47 combined goals and assists.

During that same campaign, Salah finished as both top scorer and leading creator, taking the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards. Salah had previously achieved that double in 2021-22, while Harry Kane is the only other player to have done so, in the 2020-21 season, underlining the rarity of such dominance across attacking metrics.

Last season’s creative numbers also placed Salah close to another long-standing landmark. With his final assist tally, Salah finished just two short of the single-season record of 20 assists. That record is jointly held by Thierry Henry, from the 2002-03 season, and Kevin De Bruyne, who matched it in 2019-20.

This season, however, Salah’s output has dipped under Arne Slot. Across 34 appearances in all competitions, the Liverpool forward has produced 10 goals and nine assists. That reduced return follows the peak of 2024-25 and arrives despite Salah still playing a regular role across domestic and European matches.

Salah’s future came under scrutiny in December last year after critical comments about the club’s handling of a poor run of form, which raised doubts over the forward’s long-term position. Since then, Salah has re-established a place in the squad and, before departing in 2026, will aim to add further team success to an already extensive Liverpool record.
