Bengaluru, September 13: Liverpool welcome Champions League football back to Anfield with a much-anticipated group stage encounter against Sevilla but have dealt a major blow in their preparations.

Summer signing Mohamed Salah is a doubt for Liverpool's opening Champions League group game against Sevilla at Anfield on Wednesday (September 13) night due to illness.

The £36.9million summer signing was sent home by the club's medical staff after reporting to Melwood on Tuesday (September 12).

Liverpool insist it was simply a precaution but having sat out training on Tuesday afternoon Salah could miss the clash with the La Liga outfit.

Salah's absence would be a blow as the pacey winger has scored three goals in his opening six matches for the Reds. A fine start to his Liverpool career was rewarded with the Standard Chartered Player of the Month award for August.

The Egyptian speetster is thought to have a virus and was sent home in order to stop the possibility of it spreading among the rest of the squad.

Klopp also confirmed that Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne remain long-term absentees.

He said: "Most of them are looking really good apart from Clyney and Adam. Mo we sent him home tonight.

"He was in and the doc told me Mo Salah can train, but what would be best for him is if he doesn’t have to. He has a little bit of a sore throat.

"Shouldn’t be that serious so he can’t spread the virus if there is one.

"At this moment we expect him back tomorrow morning for normal training."

Liverpool will be looking for revenge against Sevilla tonight after they lost the Europa League final to the Spanish outfit two seasons ago.

Liverpool are joined by Maribor and Spartak Moscow as well as Sevilla in Group E. On paper, it is not a tough group at all but Liverpool cannot afford to be complacent.
