The Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season has ushered in a new era for Kolkata football, with Mohammedan SC making their debut in the top division. This season, three major teams from Kolkata-Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal FC, and Mohammedan SC are competing in the league.
The inclusion of Mohammedan SC has added excitement to the Kolkata Derbies, with three intense matches already played among these rivals. As the league pauses for an international break, Mohammedan SC's head coach, Andrey Chernyshov, is reflecting on the challenges of the ISL. His team has achieved one win and two draws in seven matches so far, including a historic 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC and draws against FC Goa and East Bengal FC.

Chernyshov acknowledges the strength of the ISL competition. "We understand how strong a competition the ISL is," he stated.
The team faces skilled Indian players and talented foreign athletes. He emphasised that they haven't focused on rankings but are gaining valuable experience from each match. Their goal is to perform well and showcase quality football.
In their first Kolkata Derby against Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Mohammedan SC faced a challenging 3-0 defeat. However, they regrouped against East Bengal FC earlier this month, securing a goalless draw. These experiences have provided valuable insights for future derbies this season.
Chernyshov values fan support as crucial for better results in upcoming matches. He believes that fans' energy can inspire the team to excel, especially at home games. He encourages away fans to support them wherever they play. While not setting specific goals for this season, he assures fans of the team's commitment to giving their best effort in every match.
"I want to tell our supporters that they are the best," Chernyshov expressed. He emphasised the need for fans' positive energy both at home and away games. "We need to be together like never before in this championship," he concluded.
After the international break, Mohammedan SC will face league leaders Bengaluru FC on November 27. This match promises to be challenging against Gerard Zaragoza's well-prepared team. However, as ISL newcomers, Mohammedan SC aims to take each game step by step and potentially surprise their opponents.
Chernyshov also shared his personal connection with derbies: "Derbies are always special experiences." Having played many derbies during his career in Russia, he understands their significance and wants his team to make fans proud by performing well in these matches.
He added that playing in different cities and stadiums is a positive experience for both players and supporters: "It's a really nice feeling... We know how important it is for the ISL and for the supporters who come for these games."
Mohammedan SC's journey in ISL 2024-25 continues with determination as they strive to make an impact while cherishing every moment of this new chapter in Kolkata football history.
