The All India Football Federation has expressed condolences following the death of former India midfielder Mohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Widely respected in Indian football circles, Mohan Singh is remembered for valuable performances for the national team and for leading clubs during a notable career in the 1970s.

The federation stated that the Indian football community is collectively mourning the loss. Mohan Singh’s career spanned key domestic tournaments and major Kolkata clubs, while also including appearances for the national team during an important qualifying campaign in 1972. Tributes have focused on both achievements and long-standing influence on teammates and supporters.

AIFF President Shri Kalyan Chaubey led the tributes, acknowledging Mohan Singh’s role in Indian football history. Chaubey said, "Mohan Singh was a gifted midfielder who served Indian football with distinction during his playing days. His performances for both the national team and some of the country's most iconic clubs reflected his passion and commitment to the sport. On behalf of the Indian football fraternity, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace."

The All India Football Federation noted that Mohan Singh’s contribution spanned both club and state-level competitions. Officials highlighted that his efforts helped deliver trophies for Bengal and major Kolkata sides. The federation reiterated that Mohan Singh’s work on the pitch remains part of Indian football’s recorded history and continues to be appreciated by older followers of the game.

Before gaining wider national recognition, Mohan Singh played a decisive role for Bengal in the 1972 Santosh Trophy. Operating in midfield, Mohan Singh scored two goals during that edition. Bengal went on to lift the title, and those performances strengthened Mohan Singh’s reputation as a reliable creative presence in high-pressure domestic fixtures.

Mohan Singh then featured for several leading clubs. Mohan Singh had productive spells with East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting Club. These years saw Mohan Singh involved in title-winning squads and major cup runs across India’s main tournaments, further confirming status as an important figure in Indian club football during that era.

With East Bengal, whom he represented in 1972 and 1975, Mohan Singh scored 11 goals in different competitions. The goals came in the Calcutta Football League, IFA Shield, Bordoloi Trophy, Durand Cup and Rovers Cup. During those seasons, East Bengal won the Calcutta Football League, IFA Shield, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup and Bordoloi Trophy, with Mohan Singh contributing.

Mohan Singh moved to Mohun Bagan in 1973 and 1974, adding three goals for the club. Mohun Bagan secured the Durand Cup in 1974 during Mohan Singh’s stay. In 1976, Mohan Singh joined Mohammedan Sporting Club, extending a career that covered all three heavyweight Kolkata clubs and deepened links with Indian football supporters across rival fan bases.
