In an intriguing turn of events, Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) has hinted at Anwar Ali's continued presence at the club despite recent reports of his contract termination due to FIFA regulations.
The club posted a video montage of Anwar Ali on its Twitter handle, asking fans, "Who wants to see more Durand Cup magic from Anwar?" as MBSG prepares to defend their title with the new Indian football season starting next month.

Earlier reports, based on a tweet by Ranjit Bajaj, owner of Minerva Punjab, suggested that Anwar Ali's contract with Mohun Bagan had been terminated due to violations of FIFA's loan rules. Bajaj's tweet indicated that Ali's loan agreement was cancelled because it exceeded the one-year maximum duration set by FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP), which came into effect on July 1, 2022.
These regulations aim to foster young player development, maintain competitive balance, and prevent clubs from hoarding players. The rules stipulate that any loan exceeding one year is deemed invalid.
Anwar Ali's initial loan duration with Mohun Bagan was set for five years, making it non-compliant with the new FIFA regulations after the first year. Consequently, the agreement was terminated, and Ali was expected to return to his parent club, Delhi FC.
Bajaj mentioned that Ali was looking forward to returning to the Indian Super League (ISL) on a permanent transfer, with two of the league's top clubs interested in securing his services.
However, Mohun Bagan's cryptic tweet suggests that the situation might not be entirely resolved. The club's failure to directly address the contract termination issue implies that while the reports could be accurate, there might be ongoing efforts to convert Ali's loan agreement into a permanent deal, ensuring his stay at the club.
Anwar Ali, known for his defensive prowess and impressive performances, has been a key player for Mohun Bagan, and his potential retention would be a significant boost for the club as they aim to defend their Durand Cup title. The tweet has generated excitement among fans, who are eager to see Ali continue his "Durand Cup magic" with MBSG.
As the new season approaches, the club and Ali will need to navigate the regulatory landscape carefully to finalise his status. The outcome of these efforts will significantly impact Mohun Bagan's preparations and prospects for the upcoming tournaments.
