Mohun Bagan made a group stage exit at the Kalinga Super Cup 2024 recently and the result tasted further bitter as it came at the hands of East Bengal in a virtual quarterfinal at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Mohun Bagan, however, were significantly weakened with as many as nine Indian players away either on national duty or recovering from injury. Club captain Subhasish Bose, along with first-team players Manvir Singh, Sahal Abdul Samad, Anirudh Thapa Deepak Tangri, Vishal Kaith were among the crucial absences. Adding to the woes, wide forward Ashique Kuruniyan and centre-back Anwar Ali are recovering from injury.
Mohun Bagan, in fact, were on a six-match winning run from the start of the tournament before their ISL 2023-24 season came crashing with defeats to FC Goa, Mumbai City FC, Kerala Blasters in crucial games. They are now sitting fifth on the table while seven points off the top of the table.
