The recent Kolkata derby was one of the best displays of performance from both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. Both teams shared the spoils of the match where other than stellar performances from both sides, controversies also prevailed.
There were moments throughout the game where both teams saw decisions going against them because of soft and arguable offenses. Both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan fans and club officials shared their grievances regarding the refereeing standard of the league.

Mohun Bagan captain Subhasish Bose already spoke up on the matter before. He said that to improve the quality of Indian football, the refereeing standard needs to be considerably improved as well. Now the Mariners secretary Debasish Dutta has also spoken up on the matter.
He said, “The less said about refereeing standards the better. Several questions were raised about the referee's decision in this match. Still, with everything in mind, he was entrusted with a high-voltage match like the derby. Then that controversial decision continued throughout the match.
“As a result, complaints came from both sides. That is, the quality of his refereeing remains in doubt. So I think it's time to think. Such referees should be banned from the entire tournament. Also, steps should be taken to improve the quality of refereeing.”
This was not the first time that Mohun Bagan fell victim to bad refereeing decisions that cost them a match. Their match against Mumbai City saw a total of 16 cards including seven red cards. Some of those decisions cost the Mariners that match.
The Mariners complained about the refereeing standard. However, Rahul Gupta who was the referee in the Mumbai City vs Mohun Bagan match, was given the responsibilities of the most important game of the season, the Kolkata derby.
It was no wonder that this time when referee Rahul Gupta took charge of the game, there were 10 cards. Again, some decisions cost Mohun Bagan a win in the ISL 2023-24 Kolkata derby, so they did not keep mum.
