On Saturday, Mohun Bagan Super Giant received a critical update from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) regarding their withdrawal from the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL 2) match against Tractor FC in Iran.
Citing the "safety and security" of their players, the Indian Super League (ISL) club chose not to travel for their October 2 Group A match, as regional tensions between Iran and Israel intensified.

The AFC acknowledged Mohun Bagan's concerns as a legitimate force majeure event, recognizing the unforeseen circumstances that prompted the club's decision.
The club's statement read, "On 2nd November 2024, Mohun Bagan Super Giant has been communicated by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) that in response to the club's appeal, the AFC Competitions Committee has decided to recognise the matters raised by Mohun Bagan SG as an Event of Force Majeure. Consequently, penal consequences, as per clause 5.7 of AFC Champions League 2 Competition Regulations shall not apply to Mohun Bagan SG."
This decision relieves Mohun Bagan from penalties or fines typically imposed under ACL 2 regulations for match no-shows. Despite the favorable ruling, the club's withdrawal remains in effect for this season, as per clauses 5.5 and 5.6 of the AFC's competition guidelines.
Force Majeure is a legal concept that excuses parties from contractual obligations when unforeseen, uncontrollable events - such as natural disasters, wars, or political unrest - make fulfillment impossible or unsafe. It allows affected parties to avoid penalties, recognizing that the circumstances were out of their control.
Mohun Bagan's hesitancy to travel stemmed from heightened tensions in Iran, including missile exchanges between Iran and Israel. The situation led to unease among players, with several expressing their reluctance to the club's management.
The club ultimately decided to prioritize player safety, opting to forgo their scheduled match in Tabriz against Tractor FC. Notably, the political unrest in Iran escalated following the death of a Revolutionary Guard general in an Israeli airstrike.
This added to the players' concerns about traveling to the region. Following Mohun Bagan's withdrawal, the AFC rescheduled other matches across its tournaments due to security concerns in Iran.
Thus, leading to discontent within the club, with officials feeling their withdrawal decision warranted consistent application of AFC policies across teams. While Mohun Bagan's appeal succeeded in eliminating penalties, the club will remain absent from ACL 2 for the remainder of the season.
