ISL Champions Mohun Bagan kick off their senior team campaign for the Indian football 2023-24 season as they take on Bangladesh Army in the opening group A game of the Durand Cup 2023 at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan or Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday (August 3).
This will be the 132nd edition of the Durand Cup, which is the oldest football tournament in the continent and will be playing 24 teams for the latest edition played over three cities -- Kolkata, Keonjhar and Guwahati.
Mohun Bagan are already in action at the ongoing Calcutta Premier Division or Calcutta Football League 2023 with its youth development squad impressing with second spot in the points table in an unbeaten run under youth coach Bastab Roy.
The junior head coach also addressed the pre-match press conference on Wednesday and has been asked to be the man on the bench for the match instead of senior head coach Juan Ferrando as the club management feels he is the right guy to be in charge after the team's unbeaten start for the season, which includes five wins in six games.
The record 16-time champions, who were rechristened Mohun Bagan Super Giants late last season, are touted to be among the favourites to win the title but are clubbed with arch-rivals East Bengal in the group of death. Newly promoted to ISL, Punjab FC, formerly known as RoundGlass Punjab FC, are the other side in the group apart from Bangladesh Army.
Losing any match is not recommended by the experts as only the group topper will directly qualify for the quarterfinals while only two of the six group runners-up will progress to the knockouts based on better point haul.
If CFL matches are to be considered, as youth players have found places in the senior squad too, Mohun Bagan comes into the game defeating Calcutta FC 4-1 in their last game on July 28.
