Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal, ISL 2024-25: Mariners Go 8-points Clear at Top with 1-0 Win in Kolkata Derby

By MyKhel Staff

Mohun Bagan Super Giant solidified their Kolkata Derby dominance with a 1-0 victory over East Bengal FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season. Jamie Maclaren's early goal not only secured the win but also extended the Mariners' unbeaten streak against their rivals in the ISL.

Maclaren etched his name in the record books by scoring the fastest goal in the Kolkata Derby's ISL history, finding the net in just the second minute. Asish Rai's long ball exposed East Bengal's defensive lapse, allowing Maclaren to beat his marker and slot the ball past goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill with ease.

This win propelled Mohun Bagan to 35 points, eight ahead of second-placed Bengaluru FC, strengthening their position at the top of the table. East Bengal had their moments to respond, particularly through PV Vishnu and Cleiton Silva, who had early chances to equalize but lacked precision.

Mohun Bagan nearly doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Maclaren's cross found Manvir Singh, but the latter's effort went straight into Gill's gloves. As the first half progressed, East Bengal began gaining momentum, with Jeakson Singh, Vishnu, and Silva combining to trouble the Mariners' defense.

However, their lack of clinical finishing left them trailing at halftime. The second half was more balanced, with Mohun Bagan controlling possession while East Bengal focused on counter-attacks. The match took a decisive turn in the 64th minute when Souvik Chakrabarti made a foul on Liston Colaco.

This earned him a second yellow card, leaving East Bengal to play with 10 men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, coach Oscar Bruzon introduced Naorem Mahesh Singh to bolster midfield control. Mohun Bagan made tactical changes, bringing on Greg Stewart and Dimitrios Petratos to solidify their lead.

Stewart nearly set up a second goal for Liston, but Gill denied him with a crucial save. In the closing stages, East Bengal pushed forward but struggled to penetrate Mohun Bagan's defense, with Alberto Rodriguez anchoring the backline effectively.

Rodriguez's composed display, featuring five clearances and a passing accuracy of 88%, earned him the Player of the Match honor. Mohun Bagan will next face Jamshedpur FC on January 17, while East Bengal will look to bounce back against FC Goa on January 19.
