Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal to Be Moved Out of Kolkata due to Gangasagar Mela; Decision on alternative venue on Monday

By MyKhel Staff

The much-anticipated Kolkata Derby -- Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal -- on January 11 is set to be relocated from Kolkata. The decision stems from the logistical constraints caused by the Gangasagar Mela, a major carnival in the city.

The event requires extensive deployment of police personnel for crowd and security management, leaving insufficient resources to oversee the high-profile football match.

Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal venue change

Initially, Bhubaneswar and Jamshedpur were considered as potential venues for the marquee fixture. However, Jamshedpur FC has declined to host the game, reducing the available options. Guwahati and Delhi have since emerged as the leading contenders, with Guwahati gaining significant traction as the most likely alternative.

Officials from both clubs have expressed their understanding of the situation, acknowledging the necessity of moving the game due to public safety concerns. However, fans are disappointed that the iconic rivalry will not unfold in its traditional home, Kolkata.

Guwahati's Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium has been touted as a suitable venue due to its infrastructure and the ability to accommodate a large number of spectators. Meanwhile, Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium also remains in contention but has yet to gain the same level of support as Guwahati.

Sources close to the matter have indicated that the final decision on the venue is expected to be made by Monday. Both clubs and the league organizers are working to ensure that fans can still experience the electric atmosphere that the Kolkata Derby brings, regardless of its location.

The Kolkata Derby holds a special place in Indian football, with its storied history and fierce rivalry drawing massive crowds and fervent support. This season's encounter is expected to be no different, even with the shift in venue.

While the change has caused logistical challenges for fans planning to attend the match, the priority remains ensuring the safety and smooth conduct of both the game and the Gangasagar Mela. More updates regarding ticket sales and other arrangements are expected after the venue is finalized.

For now, all eyes are on Monday's announcement, which will determine where the storied rivalry between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal will continue its legacy this season.
