Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have face off once already in Durand Cup 2023 as the latter won 1-0 during the group stages to end their eight-match losing run in the Kolkata Derby. The defeat almost cost Mohun Bagan a place in the quarters as Mohammedan Sporting came close to knock them out on goal difference for the second lucky loser spot.

Mohun Bagan, however, showed that they deservingly reach the semis as they knocked out one of the title favourites Mumbai City FC in a tactical battle that saw Juan Ferrando outsmart Des Buckingham's three centre-back formation with a stretched five-at-thr-back defensive line.

Crucially, their new foreign signings Jason Cummings and Armando Sadikou have found the back of the net already and have been fitting in well into the already-set core of the Mohun Bagan formation. Ferrando also found a way to accomodate both Sahal Abdul Samad and Hugo Boumous in the line despite similarity in style of play.
