Mohun Bagan won't like to leave anything to chance as they take on Hyderabad FC in their second Group A match at the Kalinga Stadium Pitch 1 in Bhubaneswar on Sunday (January 14).
A victory in the game will put them on top of the table with their arch-rivals facing Sreenidi Deccan in a tricky tie later in the evening. Both the Kolkata Giants currently have three points each after hard-fought victories on the opening day of Kalinga Super Cup 2024.
The Mariners defeated Sreenidhi Deccan 2-1 in their opening group match. Their recent triumph has placed them in second place in their group right now. With 19 points from 10 games, they are currently ranked fifth in the Indian Super League (ISL) standings. They have lost their previous three games, which has resulted in a slight dip in their league standing, although they have played well in most of their games.
Several important players who are competing in the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar will not be available for the Mohun Bagan Super Giants. Hyderabad FC was defeated 3-2 by East Bengal FC in their previous group match. They aim to defeat Mohun Bagan Super Giant in order to start the campaign on a positive note.
The Yellow and Blacks are without a win in the ISL thus far this season after a difficult start to the campaign. They are bottom of the table and have lost their last two games without scoring any points. Several key players are also absent, including Nikhil Poojary, who is competing in the Asian Cup in Qatar. Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Hyderabad FC match concluded in the Mariners' favor with a 2-0 score.
It is a must-win game for Hyderabad FC, and the Mariners would also like to be in a position to strike ahead of the Kolkata derby. There is virtually little margin for error in the group, where only one team advances to the next round.
