Moises Caicedo Reflects On The Weight Of £115m Chelsea Transfer In Debut Season

Moises Caicedo struggled with confidence in his first season at Chelsea, feeling the pressure of his £115m price tag. Despite a challenging start under Mauricio Pochettino, he showed improvement towards the season's end, crediting new coach Enzo Maresca's system.

Moises Caicedo admitted he struggled with confidence during his first season at Chelsea due to the pressure of his £115 million price tag. Caicedo, who moved from Brighton to Stamford Bridge last year, initially signed for £100 million, with potential add-ons increasing the fee to a British club record of £115 million. The 22-year-old had a challenging season under Mauricio Pochettino, making 49 appearances but contributing only one goal and three assists.

Caicedo's performance was often overshadowed by his midfield partner Conor Gallagher. Gallagher, who is expected to join Atletico Madrid soon, captained Chelsea to European football last season. He outperformed Caicedo in several metrics, including tackles (52), chances created (53), and passing accuracy (91.5%). Reflecting on his experience, Caicedo said, "The beginning was tough for me because you are at a big club, the price, you always have to win every game."

Caicedo Talks Chelsea Pressure

Caicedo felt immense pressure at Chelsea compared to his time at Brighton. "At Chelsea, it is different. I felt a lot of pressure because you know the club, the history, the players who were there," he explained. However, he noted that he became more comfortable after the initial months. Towards the end of the Premier League season, Caicedo showed improvement with three of his four goal involvements coming in the final four games.

The Ecuadorian praised new head coach Enzo Maresca's style of play, which reminded him of Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi's systems at Brighton. "He plays like the same system that I played in Brighton. He wants the same," Caicedo said. "He wants me to show my quality, to have good personality, to show to my team-mates that I am the boss on the pitch."

Before joining Chelsea, Caicedo was also a target for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp wanted him after losing Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from his midfield lineup. Liverpool had agreed on a £111 million deal with Brighton before Caicedo chose Chelsea instead.

Caicedo explained his decision: "Chelsea was with me for a couple of months. I could not miss out on them because they were with me in tough moments when Brighton didn't want to let me go." He added that despite it being a difficult decision, he was certain about joining Chelsea: "For sure, 100%, I knew I wanted to go to Chelsea."

Despite a rocky start at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo's late-season form and adaptation under Maresca's guidance offer hope for better performances ahead.
