Benfica Takes Advantage With Pavlidis' Goal In Champions League Playoff Against Monaco
Vangelis Pavlidis' skillful goal gave Benfica a 1-0 lead in their Champions League playoff against Monaco, who played with 10 men. The Greek forward netted the only goal at Stade Louis II after Al Musrati was sent off for two yellow cards. Both teams had chances in the first half, with Maghnes Akliouche and Alvaro Carreras coming close to scoring.
Pavlidis broke the deadlock just three minutes into the second half by lifting the ball over Monaco's goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki from a tight angle. Shortly after, Musrati received a second yellow card for dissent, reducing Monaco to 10 players. Benfica tried to make the most of their advantage, but Majecki denied Pavlidis another goal. Nonetheless, Benfica secured a crucial edge for next week's return leg in Lisbon.

Benfica achieved a milestone by winning three consecutive Champions League away games for the first time since 1989-90. They recorded 23 shots, their highest in an away match since facing Hapoel Tel Aviv in November 2010. Pavlidis' goal marked his sixth in this season's competition, making him one of Greece's top scorers in a single European Cup campaign.
Monaco faced difficulties after Musrati's dismissal, marking the first time a Monaco player was sent off on their Champions League debut since Ousmane Dabo in 2000 against Galatasaray. Despite this setback, Antonio Silva made history by becoming the youngest Portuguese player to reach 20 Champions League appearances at just 21 years and 105 days old, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo's record.
Monaco has struggled against Portuguese teams, losing seven out of nine encounters in this competition. Their challenge intensified with Musrati's red card early in the second half. Despite these challenges, Silva's achievement provided a positive note for Portuguese football fans.
Benfica now looks forward to building on their advantage when they host Monaco for the second leg. With Pavlidis in form and Silva breaking records, they are optimistic about progressing further in the tournament.
