Thiago Motta Accepts Responsibility Following Juventus' First Defeat In Champions League Match

Thiago Motta took responsibility for Juventus' first defeat under his management after a 1-0 loss to Stuttgart. He emphasised the need for better attacking and defensive performance as they prepare for upcoming matches.

Thiago Motta accepted responsibility for Juventus' first loss under his leadership after a 1-0 defeat to Stuttgart in the Champions League. Since taking over in June, Motta had guided Juventus to six wins in ten matches across all competitions. However, they were outperformed by the Bundesliga team at home.

The decisive moment came when El Bilal Toure scored the winning goal during stoppage time in the second half. Despite this, Stuttgart could have secured victory earlier. Ermedin Demirovic hit the post, and Enzo Millot's penalty was saved by Mattia Perin, who was Juventus' standout player at Allianz Stadium.

Motta Takes Blame for Juventus' Loss

Perin made nine saves, matching Christian Abbiati's record against Bayern Munich in 2005 for most saves by a Juventus goalkeeper in a single Champions League match. Motta expressed disappointment with his team's attacking performance, which was hindered by injuries to key players like Nico Gonzalez and Teun Koopmeiners.

"I agree we need to do more in attack to compete with a team like Stuttgart, but in order to play well we need to be much better in defending than tonight," Motta stated. He acknowledged that Juventus struggled to create opportunities and emphasized the importance of solid defense for ball recovery and effective use.

Motta dismissed concerns about Juventus' physical condition compared to other top European leagues. "I don't think we go slow in Italy," he said. He noted that they struggled with Stuttgart's rhythm but highlighted the need for analysis of Italian and international football dynamics.

Juventus managed only one shot on target against Stuttgart, their lowest tally since a similar performance against Chelsea in September 2021. This statistic underscores their attacking challenges during the match.

Looking Ahead

Juventus now shifts focus back to Serie A as they aim to regain momentum against Inter Milan, who are currently one point ahead of them. Motta stressed the need for improvement as they prepare for this crucial league encounter.

Motta took full responsibility for the defeat and emphasized that improvements are necessary for upcoming matches. The team must enhance both their defensive solidity and attacking efficiency to achieve better results moving forward.
