Mason Mount Acknowledges Tuchel Connection Won't Guarantee England Recall

Mason Mount expresses his eagerness to return to the England squad under Thomas Tuchel but recognises that their relationship does not guarantee selection. He aims for regular playtime at Manchester United ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Mason Mount is eager to rejoin the England team under Thomas Tuchel, his former Chelsea manager. Despite their past connection, Mount understands that it won't automatically secure him a spot. He has earned 36 caps for England, scoring five goals, but hasn't played since the 2022 World Cup due to injuries limiting his appearances for Manchester United.

Mount has been active in Manchester United's pre-season friendlies, coming off the bench in matches against Leeds United and West Ham. He aims to secure more playing time this season as he looks forward to the 2026 World Cup. His achievements with Tuchel at Chelsea include winning the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

Mount Knows Tuchel Link Doesn't Ensure Recall

Despite his past success under Tuchel, Mount acknowledges the fierce competition for a place in England's squad. "He called me," Mount shared with BBC Sport about his recent chat with Tuchel. "I don't know how many players he called, 40 or 50 maybe. But it was good to see his face, good to catch up with him and good to speak to him."

Mount fondly recalls Tuchel's enthusiasm during their conversation. "He looked like he had loads of energy," Mount said. "He was very excited, and it was good to see what he was preparing." This interaction highlights Mount's respect for Tuchel and his eagerness to work hard for a national team recall.

Under Tuchel's guidance at Chelsea, Mount scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists—more than with any other manager. The German coach utilised Mount in 87 matches across all competitions. Only Frank Lampard used him more frequently, with 89 appearances combined at Derby County and Chelsea.

Mount expressed his pride in representing England: "It's such a big honour to play for your country. Any opportunity you get to put that shirt on is amazing and I'd love to have that opportunity again." He recognises the increased competition for selection now but remains determined.

Upcoming Matches and Goals

Manchester United will face Bournemouth in their third pre-season friendly on Wednesday. Meanwhile, England will resume their World Cup qualifying campaign against Andorra in September. Mount is keen to impress both at club level and internationally as he strives for a place in future squads.

Mount appreciates the challenge of earning an England call-up amid stiff competition: "There are no guarantees," he noted about his conversation with Tuchel. Yet this only fuels his desire to push harder for inclusion in the national team setup once more.
