Fenerbahce's manager, Jose Mourinho, expressed a surprising perspective on his team's 3-1 loss to Rangers in the Europa League last-16 first leg. Despite the defeat at home, he considered it a positive outcome given their performance. The return match is scheduled for next Thursday in Glasgow, and Mourinho remains optimistic about their chances.
Rangers took an early lead when Mohamed Diomande seized on a defensive mistake by Sebastian Szymanski. Cyriel Dessers scored within six minutes. Fenerbahce equalised with a stunning volley from Alexander Djiku after 30 minutes.

Vaclav Cerny restored Rangers' advantage just before half-time with a swift counterattack. Although Dessers had a goal disallowed for offside, Cerny secured his second goal nine minutes from time, giving Rangers a two-goal cushion. Mourinho acknowledged the defensive errors made by his team, stating, "Defensively we made incredible, incredible mistakes."
Mourinho admitted that Fenerbahce struggled against Rangers' low defensive block and quick counterattacks. He emphasised that the result was deserved due to their lack of pace in dealing with these tactics. However, he remains hopeful about turning things around in the second leg.
Barry Ferguson, Rangers' interim manager, urged caution despite the strong performance. He reminded his players that it's only half-time in the tie and praised their commitment and quality football. "We need to be ready for next Thursday," Ferguson stated confidently.
Lyon found themselves in a similar position as Rangers after securing a 3-1 victory over FCSB in Bucharest. Nicolas Tagliafico opened the scoring for Lyon, but Alexandru Baluta equalised in the second half. Substitute Malick Fofana then scored twice late on to seal the win for Lyon.
This match marked Lyon's first since coach Paulo Fonseca's suspension for nearly nine months following an altercation with referee Benoit Millot during their recent win over Brest. Fonseca is barred from matchday duties until November 30.
The upcoming second legs promise intense competition as both Fenerbahce and Lyon aim to overturn deficits and progress further in the tournament.
