'If I Speak' - Mourinho Expresses Discontent Following Fenerbahce's Champions League Departure

Jose Mourinho, following Fenerbahce's Champions League exit to Lille, revisited his famous 'if I speak' line, expressing discontent over a late penalty decision. His team now faces the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho recited his famous "if I speak" one-liner following Fenerbahce's dramatic exit from the Champions League against Lille on Tuesday. The match seemed destined for penalties after Bafode Diakite's late own-goal levelled the aggregate score in Istanbul. However, Jonathan David's long-range shot struck Jayden Oosterwolde's outstretched arm, leading to a penalty after a VAR review.

David converted the penalty in the 118th minute, securing Lille’s victory and relegating Fenerbahce to the Europa League next season. This outcome sets up a potential reunion for Mourinho with his former clubs, Manchester United or Tottenham. The Turkish side will now shift their focus to competing in the Europa League.

Mourinho's 'If I Speak' Post-Defeat Remark

In his post-match comments, Mourinho repeated his iconic remark first made during his tenure at Chelsea. This phrase was originally used after Chelsea's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the 2013-14 season, where Ramires, Willian, and Mourinho himself were sent off by referee Chris Foy. He reused this line as he appeared to disagree with the penalty decision awarded to Lille.

"We can do very well in the Europa League, but if... I prefer not to continue with this sentence," Mourinho said. "Because if I say it, I will get into trouble. It's better not to talk about the penalty." He expressed frustration over recent incidents involving referees and VAR decisions.

Mourinho added, "When I look at other incidents that have happened to me recently. Only the referee knows why it was a penalty, only the VAR knows." Despite his disappointment with the decision, he remained proud of his team's performance throughout the match.

The game had its fair share of drama right until the end. Diakite’s own goal gave Fenerbahce hope of taking the tie to penalties before David’s decisive penalty sealed their fate. The Turkish side will now prepare for their campaign in the Europa League.

Fenerbahce shared their disappointment on social media with a final score update: "Ma sonucu: Fenerbahce 1-1 LOSC Lille" alongside a picture from the match.

Mourinho’s side showed resilience but ultimately fell short due to a controversial penalty decision. As they transition to the Europa League, they aim to make a strong impact and possibly face familiar opponents along the way.
