Jose Mourinho Aims For Portugal Management Return While At Height Of Career

Jose Mourinho has expressed his ambition to return to managing in Portugal while still at the peak of his career. Currently, he is 62 and has a year remaining on his contract with Fenerbahce. In his first season, he led the team to second place behind Galatasaray in the 2024-25 Turkish league.

Despite being in his 11th managerial role and stepping away from Europe's top leagues with Fenerbahce, Mourinho insists that a move back to Portugal won't mark the end of his illustrious career. "I'm definitely coming to Portugal. It hasn't happened yet, but it will," Mourinho told Sport TV after Fenerbahce's pre-season win over Portimonense in Albufeira.

Mourinho Seeks Return to Portugal Management

Mourinho left Portugal for Chelsea in 2004 after leading Porto to Champions League success. Since then, he has enjoyed a trophy-filled career across Europe. He has secured 26 major trophies, including triumphs during two spells at Chelsea and a treble with Inter Milan in 2009-10. His achievements also span Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Roma.

"Not because I feel like I'm nearing the end; I feel far from that," Mourinho stated about his future plans. "I don't want to come to Portugal for a golden retirement or for the last years of my career. I want to come to Portugal at the height of my career, in good health and physically and mentally strong. I'll definitely be back."

When asked if he preferred club management or leading Portugal's national team, Mourinho replied: "Anything." Recently, he denied rumours of discussions with Portugal's Football Federation about becoming the national team manager before the 2026 World Cup.

However, Mourinho disclosed last year that he had twice declined offers to coach his country. Roberto Martinez has been leading Portugal since January 2023 and recently guided them to their second UEFA Nations League victory by defeating Spain on penalties.

Mourinho remains focused on returning to Portuguese football while maintaining his competitive edge. His commitment reflects his desire not just for nostalgia but for continued success at a high level.
