David Moyes has expressed the necessity for improvement after Everton's defeat to Aston Villa marked the start of his second tenure. Ollie Watkins' goal at Goodison Park meant Moyes couldn't secure a win following Sean Dyche's departure. Everton remains 16th in the Premier League, just one point above relegation, having failed to score in nine of their last 11 matches.
The team's lack of confidence was evident when Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a crucial chance in stoppage time. Moyes acknowledged that immediate change isn't possible but stressed the importance of strengthening during the transfer window. "You can definitely see over the years that the financial situation has played its part on the pitch and that's the outcome. All the supporters are aware of that," he told BBC Match of the Day.

Moyes noted that Everton had some opportunities but lacked control and possession. "There was very little in the game, they had a couple of chances which we were fortunate with. We needed better control of the game, a better level of possession," he added. The match was tight, with a minor lapse leading to Villa's goal.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa ended their streak of five consecutive away losses and moved closer to Champions League qualification. Unai Emery commented on breaking their poor away form: "Away, we were in a bad spell, and had to break it. To get three points is very difficult, and we're very happy." He praised his team's performance over 90 minutes despite not fully controlling the second half.
Morgan Rogers highlighted Villa's determination: "It's such a tough place to come, and we were scrapping in the second half, but those wins are sweeter than the ones where you win comfortably." He emphasised their defensive resilience as key to their success.
Moyes appreciates inheriting players with strong character from Dyche but recognises that adding quality is essential for future results. He believes enhancing player quality will boost morale: "I think it's really important if we can add some of that quality and give the players a little lift as well."
As Everton looks ahead, Moyes aims to build on existing strengths while addressing weaknesses through strategic signings. The focus remains on improving performance and securing better results in upcoming fixtures.
