Everton's manager, David Moyes, expressed confusion over Liverpool's winning goal being allowed during the Merseyside derby. Despite Everton's nine-match unbeaten run in the Premier League ending with Diogo Jota's second-half goal at Anfield, Moyes questioned the decision. Luis Diaz was in an offside position during the build-up but was judged not to interfere with play.
Moyes believed the offside call was straightforward for officials. "The players behind Jarrad [Branthwaite] interfere with him clearing it," he stated. "I cannot understand any reason why that wasn't given offside. I don't know if it can be any clearer." He found it frustrating that a decision he felt was obvious affected the game's outcome.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also thought Diaz should have been flagged offside but understood referee Sam Barrott's challenge. "In the moment, I can't see what's happening, but Jarrad said it was a stonewall offside straight away," Pickford told Sky Sports. He acknowledged the difficulty of refereeing and anticipated further discussion on the decision.
This defeat marked only Everton's second loss in 11 Premier League matches since Moyes' return (W4 D5). Despite this setback, Moyes praised his team's effort against Liverpool, who lead the league standings. He admitted Liverpool were superior but commended his players' resilience and determination to close the gap between their performance levels.
Moyes noted that although Everton had opportunities, including Beto's disallowed goal and a shot hitting the post, they needed improvement. "Liverpool were the better team and that's why they're top of the league," he added. "We have been on a great run; the players have been doing brilliantly."
The match highlighted areas where Everton must improve to compete with top-tier teams like Liverpool. Moyes recognised their efforts but stressed that more work is needed to reach higher standards consistently.
