After being held for goalless draws by FC Goa and East Bengal, Mumbai City FC are facing their toughest rival of the 2023-24 season as the host defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giants at the Mumbai Football Arena in Mumbai on Wednesday (December 20).
The back-to-back draws for Mumbai City under new manager Petr Kratky have push them 5th on the table with 16 points in 10 games but can go level on points with Mohun Bagan (19 points in 7 games), who have the chance to topple FC Goa (20 points in 8 games).
The Islanders' 4-0 thumping of Bengaluru FC earlier this month shown that they have the experience and quality in their roster to quickly learn from their mistakes and improve on the pitch. This was done without a head coach in place. This matchup between two of the ISL's most potent teams looks to be an incredible one.
Kratky needs to be thinking carefully about what has happened to Mumbai City FC over the past 180 minutes. Although the outcome in Goa was predictable, there must have been some concern in the camp regarding their incapacity to score against the Red & Gold Brigade. The Islanders, however, are too busy to take their time and make the past too complicated.
MCFC, however, have not dropped a game against the Mohun Bagan Super Giants in their last seven ISL encounters, and their current three-game winning streak is the second-longest in the competition's history.
Not that they haven't been creating opportunities in their last two games, but Jorge Pereyra Diaz, the ISL 2023-24 leading goal scorer with six goals, needs to make up for the lack of clinical skill up front. Additionally, Kratky has been experimenting with lineup changes; in the most recent game, midfielder Jayesh Rane was given the starting nod.
