Mumbai City vs East Bengal: Kolkata giants hold Islanders to Goalless Draw

By MyKhel Staff

Mumbai City FC and East Bengal FC played out a goalless draw at the Mumbai Football Arena in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25.

This result marked East Bengal FC's 100th match in the ISL, helping them climb to 10th place in the standings with 18 points from as many games. Meanwhile, Mumbai City FC recorded their seventh draw of the season, remaining in sixth place with 28 points from 18 matches, despite dominating possession with 62.4%.

Mumbai City vs East Bengal

East Bengal started strongly, creating an early opportunity in the 14th minute. Dimitrios Diamantakos attracted defenders towards the center before releasing Naorem Mahesh Singh on the left flank. Mahesh showcased his quick footwork and sent in a low cross to Nandhakumar Sekar at the far post. Nandhakumar's first touch was sharp, but his shot from a tight angle was blocked by Mumbai City FC's goalkeeper, Phurba Lachenpa.

Diamantakos remained at the center of the action and had another golden chance in the 44th minute. David Lalhlansanga set up Vishnu Puthiya, who swiftly delivered a cross to Diamantakos. However, the striker couldn't adjust his position in time and directed his header off target to the left.

Two minutes later, as Mumbai City FC attempted to reorganize, Diamantakos applied high pressure and dispossessed Jon Toral just outside the box. His subsequent powerful shot ricocheted off the left post, marking East Bengal FC's closest attempt at goal in the first half.

Mumbai City FC nearly broke the deadlock early in the second half when Vikram Partap Singh found himself in a prime position. Bipin Singh controlled a cross from the left post and set it up for Vikram, but the attacker lost his footing and missed from just a couple of yards out.

East Bengal FC also squandered a close-range opportunity. Mahesh displayed an explosive burst of speed down the left flank but chose to send a lateral ball to Diamantakos rather than driving into the box himself. Diamantakos leapt high but was once again denied by the woodwork, striking the left post for the second time in the match.

Substitute Jorge Ortiz, who replaced Thaer Krouma in the 63rd minute, injected energy into Mumbai City FC's attack and came close to scoring twice in the 81st minute. First, he latched onto a pass from Yoell van Nieff inside the box and directed a shot toward the center of the goal, only for Prabhsukhan Singh Gill to make a crucial save. Moments later, Lallianzuala Chhangte pounced on a loose ball and laid it off to Ortiz outside the box, but Gill was once again alert to deny him, ensuring East Bengal FC secured a hard-fought point from the contest.
