Nagelsmann Sticks To Winning Strategy For Netherlands Nations League Match

Julian Nagelsmann, Germany's head coach, aims for minimal lineup changes in the upcoming Nations League match against the Netherlands, despite Niclas Fullkrug's injury. This decision follows a triumphant 5-0 victory over Hungary.

Julian Nagelsmann, Germany's head coach, plans minimal changes for their Nations League match against the Netherlands. Despite a 5-0 win over Hungary, Nagelsmann confirmed Niclas Fullkrug will miss the game due to an Achilles tendon injury. Fullkrug, who scored twice at Euro 2024 and in the Nations League opener, was replaced by Maximilian Beier in the 60th minute against Hungary.

Germany's victory over Hungary was their first without several retired stars from Euro 2024. Ilkay Gundogan, Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller, and Manuel Neuer have retired, leaving a gap for new players to step up. Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen seized this chance, keeping a clean sheet despite facing only one shot on target.

Nagelsmann's Consistent Approach

Nagelsmann emphasised continuity but acknowledged the different challenge posed by the Netherlands. "We are not thinking about changing much," he said. "There are certainly things we can do similarly. But it is a different opponent with a different style of play." This approach aims to balance consistency with tactical flexibility.

Ter Stegen's performance against Hungary was praised by Nagelsmann. "Marc played a very good game against Hungary," he said. "He is a very important player for us because he has been with Barcelona for years and has a responsible position there as captain." Ter Stegen has often been second choice to Neuer but now has an opportunity to solidify his place.

The absence of Fullkrug presents a challenge for Germany. His expected goals (xG) tally of 1.11 against Hungary highlighted his importance. However, Nagelsmann remains optimistic about his squad's depth and ability to adapt to different opponents.

Nagelsmann had previously informed Ter Stegen that Neuer would start at the European Championships despite injuries. "The conversation wasn't particularly pleasant," Nagelsmann admitted. "Marc took it well and accepted the decision." This situation underscores the competitive nature within the squad and Ter Stegen's professionalism.

This upcoming match against the Netherlands will test Germany's adaptability without some of their key players. The team aims to continue their strong performance while integrating new talents into their lineup.
