Wilfried Nancy Remains Confident Amid Celtic's Early Season Challenges

Wilfried Nancy insists he has nothing to prove despite a challenging start with Celtic. The French manager became the first in the club's history to lose his first two matches, falling to Hearts and Roma in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League. A subsequent 3-1 defeat to St Mirren in the Scottish League Cup final meant Celtic failed to retain their title.

Despite these setbacks, Nancy remains optimistic about Celtic's prospects. The team sits second in the league, trailing leaders Hearts by six points but with two games in hand. Nancy is confident that his squad can reverse their fortunes soon. "I'm very grateful with the people that I work with," he said. "They know why I am here; they protect me, they know what I want to do for the club."

Celtic are preparing for an away match against Dundee United on Wednesday, aiming to return to winning form. The Bhoys have not lost in their last 23 encounters with Dundee United across all competitions, securing 18 wins and five draws. They have also won their last two away league matches but haven't achieved three consecutive away victories since December 2024.

Nancy took over as manager in early December after interim boss Martin O'Neill led Celtic to seven wins out of eight matches, achieving an impressive 87.5% win rate during his second tenure. Despite recent losses, Nancy appreciates the support from within the club. "The club, the people within the club, the board and everyone has been spot on," he noted.

Nancy is determined to ignore external criticism but acknowledges it can be challenging. "The only thing that I know is I receive a lot of messages from my family to ask me if I'm OK," he shared. He understands that pressure is part of football management both in Europe and MLS, though it's less intense there.

He remains focused on his objectives and believes adversity will make him stronger. "You might think I am crazy, but I am embracing this adversity because I know I'm getting better," he stated. Nancy emphasises coherence with his team and doing his job well as key priorities.

Nancy's approach reflects his belief that results will eventually turn positive if he stays true to his methods and maintains consistency with his team. He concluded by saying, "I don't have to prove anything to anybody, simple as that." His focus remains on guiding Celtic back to success through dedication and hard work.
