Naomi Layzell Impresses With Goal And Assist In Women's Champions League Debut Against Barcelona

Naomi Layzell marked her Women's Champions League debut with a goal and assist, helping Manchester City secure a 2-0 victory over Barcelona. The match showcased City's resilience and tactical prowess against the defending champions.

Naomi Layzell had an impressive debut in the Women's Champions League, contributing a goal and an assist to help Manchester City defeat Barcelona 2-0. Previously with Bristol City in the Women's Super League, Layzell shone at the Joie Stadium. This marked City's return to the competition since their quarter-final loss to Barcelona in March 2021.

Barcelona, known for their scoring prowess, had only failed to score once in their previous 79 matches before this game. They improved after halftime, seeking an equaliser. Aitana Bonmati's shot required a smart save from Ayaka Yamashita, while substitute Claudia Pina nearly scored from distance as City faced intense pressure from the defending champions.

Layzell Stars in Champions League Debut for City

City almost conceded early when Caroline Hansen's shot hit the post just three minutes into the match. Shortly after, Lauren Hemp also struck the woodwork. As City settled into the game, they nearly scored in the 35th minute when Vivianne Miedema set up Khadija Shaw, but her attempt was saved by Cata Coll.

From the ensuing corner, Miedema headed back into danger, allowing Layzell to slide in and score on her Champions League debut. The hosts later delivered a decisive blow in the 77th minute with Layzell assisting Shaw. Shaw skillfully evaded Patri Guijarro's challenge and rounded Coll to secure City's victory.

The Citizens finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.68 compared to Barcelona's 1.5, despite having four fewer shots than their opponents. Taylor's team is now level on points with Hammarby in Group D after Hammarby defeated Austria's St. Polten 2-0 earlier that day.

Meanwhile, Juventus began their campaign with a win over Valerenga in Group C at Intility Arena. Sofia Cantore scored the decisive goal in the 29th minute with a right-footed shot past Tove Enblom against the run of play. Despite Valerenga taking 25 shots with six on target and ending with an xG of 2.2, Juventus held on for victory.

Juventus' Narrow Victory

Massimiliano Canzi's side now shares the top spot in Group C with Bayern Munich following Bayern's 5-2 victory over Arsenal. Juventus struggled throughout their match but managed to secure three points thanks to Cantore's goal.

This thrilling start to the Women's Champions League highlights Manchester City's tactical prowess and Juventus' resilience under pressure as both teams aim for success in their respective groups.
