Napoli closed the gap to three points behind Serie A leaders Inter after a thrilling 2-1 victory over AC Milan on Sunday at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Earlier in the day, Inter had extended their lead with a win against Udinese, but Napoli's determined performance kept their Scudetto ambitions alive.
Before the match, AC Milan announced that Ruben Loftus-Cheek underwent successful appendectomy surgery due to acute appendicitis. He is expected to be out for an extended period. Despite this setback, Milan faced a challenging start as Napoli took an early lead.

Napoli made an explosive start, scoring just over a minute into the game. Matteo Politano latched onto Giovanni Di Lorenzo's precise pass behind Milan's defence, holding off Strahinja Pavlovic before scoring from inside the box. Romelu Lukaku doubled Napoli's advantage in the 19th minute with a scuffed shot past Mike Maignan, following Billy Gilmour's clever assist.
The hosts went into halftime with a two-goal cushion. However, Milan showed improvement in the second half. Substitute Santiago Gimenez came close to scoring shortly after entering the field but missed narrowly.
Milan was handed a chance to get back into the game when Theo Hernandez was fouled by Philip Billing in the penalty area. Billing had only been on the pitch for four minutes after replacing Frank Anguissa. Santiago Gimenez stepped up for the penalty but saw his weak effort saved brilliantly by Alex Meret, who dived low to his left.
Despite this setback, Milan continued to press forward. With seven minutes left, Luka Jovic came off the bench to score from Hernandez’s cross into the six-yard box. This goal set up a frantic finish as Milan pushed hard for an equaliser.
Romelu Lukaku’s goal against Milan marked his 400th career goal across club and country. He has been particularly effective against AC Milan, contributing nine goals (seven goals and two assists) against them in Serie A competitions. Lukaku is also notable for being the first Napoli player since Jose Callejon in 2016-17 to score in both league matches against Milan in one season.
The pivotal moment of the match was Alex Meret’s penalty save from Gimenez. The Italian goalkeeper has conceded only once from four penalties faced this season. Only Vanja Milinkovic-Savic remains unbeaten from 12 yards among Serie A keepers this season.
Milan’s struggles with penalties persisted as they missed their fourth spot-kick of this Serie A season, tying them with Freiburg for most misses among teams in Europe’s top five leagues. Despite their late efforts to equalise against Napoli, Sergio Conceicao’s side could not find another breakthrough.
This result keeps Napoli firmly in contention for the title race while highlighting both Lukaku’s remarkable achievement and Meret’s crucial role in securing victory.
