Netherlands Beat Sweden 5-1 As Brobbey And Gakpo Brace Define World Cup 2026 Group F

The Netherlands delivered a powerful response in Group F, overwhelming Sweden 5-1 in Houston. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both scored twice, while Crysencio Summerville added a late fifth. Anthony Elanga claimed Sweden’s only goal, but Ronald Koeman’s side now look almost certain to reach the 2026 World Cup knockout rounds.

Koeman made one change from the 2-2 draw with Japan, bringing Brobbey in for Summerville. Brobbey struck twice inside 17 minutes, recording one of the fastest braces in World Cup history. Gakpo then hit a second-half double, ensuring the Netherlands’ first victory of the tournament arrived with authority.

Netherlands beat Sweden 5-1 with braces

The opening goal came in the fifth minute, from a flowing Netherlands move through the centre and left. Brobbey held the ball up strongly and released Tijjani Reijnders, who moved it on to Gakpo. The Liverpool forward crossed low from the left, and Brobbey finished sharply from close range to cap the sequence.

Sweden almost replied when Viktor Gyokeres forced Bart Verbruggen into a save with a firm effort. Instead, the Netherlands doubled their lead soon after, again exploiting space on the flanks. Denzel Dumfries delivered from the right side, and Brobbey attacked the cross aggressively, steering a stretching finish into the bottom-left corner for 2-0.

After the first-half hydration break, Sweden gained more territory and started troubling the Netherlands defence. Donyell Malen went close with a cross-shot that drifted wide, but most late chances before half-time fell to Graham Potter’s team. Gyokeres twice tested Verbruggen again, Yasin Ayari drew another low stop, and Gustaf Lagerbielke’s header from Benjamin Nygren’s free-kick was ruled offside.

The Netherlands punished those missed opportunities shortly after the interval, with Gakpo taking control of the contest. First, Dumfries again crossed low from the right, and Gakpo arrived to tap in from close range. Minutes later, Gakpo received possession inside the area and beat Kristoffer Nordfeldt with a clever reverse finish at the near post.

Potter reacted at 4-0 by introducing Elanga, who made an immediate impact in the final third. Elanga latched onto a through ball from Alexander Isak and lifted the finish over Verbruggen within four minutes of coming on. Any Swedish hope faded, though, as Summerville struck in the 89th minute, bending a precise shot into the bottom-left corner to complete the 5-1 scoreline.

Netherlands vs Sweden World Cup 2026: records, xG and Group F picture

This meeting differed sharply from previous tournament clashes between the Netherlands and Sweden. Their 1974 World Cup and Euro 2004 encounters both ended 0-0, despite notable drama in each. The 1974 match saw the debut of the "Cruyff turn", while the Euro 2004 quarter-final finished with an Oranje penalty shoot-out win.

Brobbey’s impact in Houston surprised many observers, given earlier international numbers for the forward. Brobbey had scored only once across 13 senior Netherlands appearances before this fixture. By striking twice in 17 minutes, Brobbey delivered the fourth-fastest brace in World Cup history, immediately giving Koeman’s side a target presence and clinical edge inside the penalty area.

Brobbey’s second goal was timed at 16:12, placing the striker behind three names on that list. Lukas Podolski hit a brace for Germany against Sweden in 2006 after 11:35. Ronaldo Nazario achieved his double for Brazil versus Costa Rica in 2002 after 12:16. Gary Lineker’s two goals for England against Poland in 1986 came by 13:46.

Gakpo matched Brobbey’s tally and reached five World Cup group-stage goals, equalling Robin van Persie’s Netherlands record. This is only the second time two Netherlands players have each scored twice in a World Cup match. The previous instance came in 2014, when Van Persie and Arjen Robben both struck braces in a 5-1 win over Spain.

Match statistics underlined how Sweden competed in spells despite the heavy defeat in Group F. Sweden recorded 16 shots to the Netherlands’ 10 but allowed clearer chances, losing the expected goals contest 0.99 to 2.47. The Oranje now sit in a strong position to advance, while Sweden must respond quickly to keep qualification hopes alive.
