Netherlands Face Setback As Dumfries Red Card Hampers World Cup Preparations Against Ecuador
Netherlands survived a demanding test with 10 players, drawing 1-1 against Ecuador at Philips Stadion. Denzel Dumfries received a straight red card in the 12th minute, leaving Ronald Koeman’s team under pressure. Ecuador created far more chances, but a strong defensive effort protected the score and limited clear openings.
Ecuador controlled much of the second half, using the extra player to pin Netherlands deep. John Yeboah and Moises Caicedo had efforts blocked during a dominant spell around the hour. Gonzalo Plata then dragged a shot wide, and late attempts from Jordy Caicedo and Jordy Alcivar also missed the target.

The match opened with immediate drama as Netherlands went ahead in the third minute. Willian Pacho tried to clear inside the box, but the ball rebounded off Pacho’s own foot and beat goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle. The early own goal shocked Ecuador, yet the visitors responded with aggressive counter-attacks.
That reaction almost produced a quick leveller when a swift Ecuador break ended with Yeboah striking the woodwork. Soon after, Dumfries brought down Plata as last defender and was dismissed. Plata remained heavily involved and, approaching the half-hour, drew a foul from goalkeeper Mark Flekken, winning a penalty.
Enner Valencia stepped up from the spot and calmly hit the bottom-left corner to equalise. From that moment, Ecuador dictated possession and tempo, while Netherlands focused on compact defending. The visitors tried to stretch play across both flanks, seeking space around the tiring Dutch backline.
Koeman faced a demanding examination of squad resilience rather than the fluent display expected before the World Cup. Ecuador produced 17 shots and 1.57 expected goals, compared with Netherlands’ two attempts and 0.13 expected goals. The numerical advantage showed in sustained pressure, but Ecuador lacked a decisive final action.
The timing of the dismissal added another statistical note to the contest. The red card for Dumfries within 12 minutes is the third fastest ever for Oranje, after Wim Kiefts red v Belgium in 1985 (four minutes) and Bruno Martins Indis red v Italy in 2014 (nine).
Netherlands leave Eindhoven with a hard-earned draw, having protected a point despite playing with 10 players for 78 minutes. Ecuador will reflect on missed chances and periods of dominance. For Koeman, the match offered stern preparation for tournament conditions, while Ecuador proved capable of troubling higher-ranked opposition.
