Crysencio Summerville Among Netherlands World Cup Call-Up Surprised By Selection

Crysencio Summerville says a first senior call-up for the Netherlands World Cup squad caught Summerville off guard, yet the West Ham winger heads to the 2026 tournament eager to impress before the Oranje begin Group F against Japan on 14 June in Arlington.

Summerville has never played for the Dutch senior side, despite regular youth appearances up to under-21 level, and an injury ruled Summerville out of March friendlies against Norway and Ecuador, making the winger’s selection more unexpected and heightening interest in how Summerville will feature this summer.

Oranje call-up surprises Summerville

"So much emotion was unleashed, Summerville told ESPN Netherlands of the moment he was called up. Of course, the coach has to see you, to see if you fit into the group. That's in terms of playing style, but also how you fit in with the group. So it was quite a surprise. I think they [coaching staff] have seen a number of matches, so in terms of quality, they know what I can do. I also know a lot of guys from my youth, so that's all good. I am fired up. I can't wait to get started. From the first whistle, it's full steam ahead for me. If the coach puts me in the starting line-up, I'll be there."

Summerville travels to the World Cup on the back of a demanding Premier League campaign with West Ham, scoring five goals and registering two assists from 31 league appearances in 2025-26, though those efforts did not prevent West Ham from being relegated to the Championship.

Across those 31 matches, Summerville started 29 times and was one of West Ham’s main dribblers, with only Jarrod Bowen attempting more dribbles, while Summerville also ranked second for completed dribbles among West Ham players, underlining the winger’s direct style ahead of a potential World Cup debut.

The Netherlands enter the 2026 World Cup aiming for a first world title, and this will be the country’s 12th appearance at the finals, with the Oranje previously finishing runners-up three times, in 1974, 1978 and 2010, the most second-place finishes for any team yet to lift the trophy.

Across 55 World Cup matches, excluding penalty shoot-outs, the Netherlands have won 30, producing a win rate of 54.5%, which is bettered only by Brazil, on 66.7%, and Germany, on 60.7%, highlighting the historical strength Summerville now joins on the global stage.

Crysencio Summerville focus ahead of Netherlands World Cup opener

The Netherlands face Japan first in Group F on 14 June in Arlington, and Summerville’s familiarity with several squad members from youth levels may ease the transition into Ronald Koeman’s senior group, especially as Summerville arrives with strong club minutes despite West Ham’s relegation setback.

With Summerville stressing a readiness to attack from the "first whistle", the winger offers Netherlands an energetic wide option for World Cup matches in the United States, while the mix of surprise at selection and clear determination suggests a player eager to contribute if selected in any role.

Summerville therefore arrives at the 2026 World Cup as an uncapped but confident winger, coming off a relegation season yet carrying strong dribbling numbers, joining a Netherlands side with a rich record but no world title, and looking to seize any chance offered in Group F and beyond.
