Memphis Depay Returns In Netherlands World Cup Squad As Frimpong Omitted

Memphis Depay has recovered from a hamstring problem and is named in the Netherlands World Cup squad, but Jeremie Frimpong misses out despite a strong Liverpool season. Depay, the all-time leading Netherlands scorer with 55 goals from 108 caps, is included for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ronald Koeman has confirmed a 26-player group for the finals, with Frimpong not among the defenders chosen. Koeman favours other options at full-back, even after Frimpong’s impressive first campaign at Liverpool, and also leaves out experienced centre-back Stefan de Vrij, who has not overcome injury in time.

Depay returns in Netherlands World Cup squad

The Netherlands World Cup squad is dominated by Premier League names, with 15 players currently based in England’s top division. Seven of the eight selected defenders play in the Premier League, while Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries is the only defender from another league.

Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo represent Liverpool in the Netherlands World Cup squad, while Brighton contribute Bart Verbruggen, Jan Paul van Hecke and Mats Wieffer. Manchester City supply Nathan Ake and Tijjani Reijnders, with Jorrel Hato from Chelsea and Micky van de Ven from Tottenham also included.

The Netherlands World Cup squad is missing Xavi Simons and Jerdy Schouten, who both suffer torn anterior cruciate ligaments. Their absence reduces Koeman’s midfield options, although Marten de Roon returns after not featuring since March 2024, and Guus Til also comes back following a single appearance since June 2022.

Crysencio Summerville gains a first senior call-up in the Netherlands World Cup squad and may debut at the tournament. Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber is also selected, despite Koeman’s earlier doubts and the fact Timber has not played for the club since March because of an ankle injury.

Selection calls and fixtures for Netherlands World Cup squad

The omission of Frimpong from the Netherlands World Cup squad stands out, given the full-back’s encouraging debut season at Liverpool. Koeman instead relies on Dumfries and other Premier League defenders, while Depay’s inclusion offers vital experience in attack alongside Brian Brobbey, Cody Gakpo, Noa Lang and Wout Weghorst.

The Netherlands World Cup squad begins its campaign against Japan on 14 June, then meets Sweden before closing Group F against Tunisia. The schedule offers little margin for error, so Koeman leans on experienced players such as Depay, van Dijk and Frenkie de Jong in key positions.
