Neto Decides On Participation In Palmeiras Clash Following Tragic Death Of Diogo Jota

Following the tragic death of Diogo Jota, Enzo Maresca has left it to Pedro Neto to decide if he will play against Palmeiras in the Club World Cup. The team supports Neto during this difficult time.

Pedro Neto faces a personal decision about playing in Chelsea's Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras. This follows the tragic death of his former teammate, Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident with his brother Andre Silva. Neto, who played alongside Jota at Wolves and for Portugal, has been instrumental in Chelsea's recent success, scoring in three consecutive matches for the first time in his career.

The news of Jota's passing has affected other Portuguese players as well. Al-Hilal's manager, Simone Inzaghi, acknowledged the emotional impact on Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves. Both players were close to Jota, having played together for Portugal and Wolves. Inzaghi stated, "These things should never happen. We have two Portugal players, Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, who were friends to them."

Neto's Participation in Palmeiras Match Uncertain

Chelsea recently held a minute's silence to honour Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. The club expressed their condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is leaving it up to Neto to decide if he feels ready to play. Maresca said, "It's completely Pedro's decision if he wants to play."

Chelsea could see new signing Joao Perdo make his debut against Palmeiras after completing a £60 million transfer from Brighton. He joins as Chelsea’s sixth acquisition this summer alongside Liam Delap, Estevao, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, and Kendry Paez. However, Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund will not feature in the tournament.

Maresca commented on Joao Perdo's situation: "Joao's situation is a bit strange because he was on holiday. He was working but it's not the same when you work for yourself compared with when you work for the team." Maresca added that they are pleased with Joao’s progress and may give him some minutes if needed.

Palmeiras' Challenge

Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira recognises Chelsea as favourites but hopes American fans will support his team during their match on July 4th at Lincoln Financial Field. Ferreira stated: "Yes, we are the underdog... It can be a good opportunity for the local people to join up with us against the English."

Palmeiras secured their place in this stage by defeating Botafogo 1-0 after extra time in their previous match. They have kept ten clean sheets in their last 14 games since April 30th but have conceded multiple goals in three of those matches where they failed to keep a clean sheet.

Ferreira remains optimistic about facing Chelsea: "We will give our best tomorrow... It's true that Chelsea have a big team with a lot of talent... But we have a dream." He emphasised that Palmeiras would fight hard for victory.

The history between English and Brazilian teams at this tournament shows English sides winning four out of seven encounters. Chelsea previously defeated Palmeiras in the 2021 final with Kai Havertz scoring the decisive goal in extra time.

As both teams prepare for this crucial match-up, emotions run high due to recent events affecting players personally connected through friendships and shared experiences on and off-field battles alike.
