New England Revolution Preview Against CF Montreal As Mitrovic Seeks Deschamps-Inspired Tactics
New England Revolution resume MLS action against CF Montreal with head coach Marko Mitrovic drawing on fresh ideas from a recent meeting with France coach Didier Deschamps, while new forward Marcos Zambrano strengthens the attack as both clubs, each on three points, look to move up the Eastern Conference following difficult season starts.
Mitrovic took charge of New England ahead of the 2026 campaign and opened with one win and three defeats from four league fixtures. CF Montreal have also collected three points, but from five games, and enter this match after consecutive losses to Orlando City, 2-1, and FC Cincinnati, 4-3, before the international pause.

During the international break, France used the Revolution’s facility in Foxborough before a 2-1 friendly victory over Brazil, giving Mitrovic rare access to Deschamps’ work. Mitrovic observed training sessions and match preparation, taking notes on structure and detail that could help New England sharpen organisation, especially in defensive transitions and set-piece planning.
Reflecting on the occasion, Mitrovic highlighted the scale of that France versus Brazil meeting and its value for both national teams ahead of the World Cup. Mitrovic said: "To watch France and Brazil, anywhere around the world, it's an amazing event. It's one of the best events in sports, and having the opportunity to watch it here, even if it was a friendly game... Those were the last games before the World Cup, so I believe it meant a lot to both teams, to prepare in the best possible way for the World Cup."
New England added depth in the final third last week by signing Marcos Zambrano from Real Salt Lake. Zambrano previously played under Mitrovic for the United States under-20 side, and that shared history could speed up adaptation as the Revolution seek greater movement and pressing from the forward line in coming fixtures.
Zambrano expressed strong trust in Mitrovic based on several years working together at youth international level. Zambrano said: "I'm very grateful to be with him. I've worked with him for years with the national team, since I was 16 or 17 years old. So, I'm very happy for this opportunity. He knows me very well, and he trusts me because he knows the player I can be."
New England Revolution vs CF Montreal player form and key threats
Luca Langoni has emerged as New England’s leading creator, registering four assists across the opening four MLS matches. That output makes Langoni the first Revolution player to deliver four assists in the club’s first four league games of a season since Steve Ralston reached the same mark in the 2002 campaign.
CF Montreal bring significant attacking threat of their own through Prince Owusu and Wiki Carmona, who have combined for nine goals and three assists this year. Owusu has four goals and one assist, while Carmona has three goals and two assists, giving Montreal two forwards already on five direct goal contributions from five games.
That duo join a short list in club history. Owusu and Carmona are the first Montreal team-mates to each reach five goal contributions in the opening five matches of a season, a feat previously achieved only by Djordje Mihailovic in 2022 and Ignacio Piatti in 2016. Across MLS this year, only Petar Musa, with six goals, has scored more than Owusu.
New England Revolution vs CF Montreal defensive concerns, history and Opta outlook
Defensively, Montreal face scrutiny after conceding 14 goals, the second-highest total in MLS, with only Orlando City allowing more, on 17. That 14-goal figure matches Montreal’s worst defensive start through five games in any MLS season, equalling the concession tally recorded by the club in the 2022 campaign.
New England return to Gillette Stadium for the first time since a 6-1 win over FC Cincinnati on March 15, which matched their biggest home margin against MLS opposition. The Revolution had previously scored six at home only once, also a 6-1 victory, against Colorado Rapids in 2004, underlining their potential when momentum builds.
Meetings between these clubs have often produced clear winning margins. The sides shared last season’s series, with both victories coming away from home and decided by multiple goals. Six of the last nine clashes have featured winning margins of at least two goals, and three of those matches ended with a difference of four goals or greater.
Analysts anticipate a more competitive match this time, though New England are still viewed as slight favourites, helped by home advantage and Montreal’s defensive record. A draw remains possible, but Opta’s model suggests a higher probability of a Revolution victory than either a Montreal win or a shared result in Foxborough.
{TABLE_1}| Outcome | Opta win probability |
|---|---|
| New England Revolution win | 48% |
| CF Montreal win | 26% |
| Draw | 26% |
Both New England Revolution and CF Montreal enter this fixture under pressure but with clear attacking strengths, highlighted by Langoni’s creativity and Montreal’s productive pairing of Owusu and Carmona, while Mitrovic’s recent exposure to Deschamps’ methods, Zambrano’s arrival and a strong home record provide New England with measured optimism for an improved MLS run.
