New Zealand's football team secured a 3-0 victory over New Caledonia, earning their spot in the World Cup for the third time. The match at Eden Park on Monday saw the All Whites face tough opposition before Michael Boxall scored in the 61st minute. Despite this success, captain Chris Wood had to leave early due to a hip injury.
The first hour was challenging for New Zealand as they struggled to create clear chances. Rocky Nyikeine, New Caledonia's goalkeeper, made it difficult for them to score. "It's not great for us losing our captain and our goalscorer," said coach Darren Bazeley. "It was a difficult thing for the team but they came through so well."

Chris Wood, known for his goal-scoring prowess, wasn't at his best during the game. He even mishit a volley in the first half. By halftime, with no goals scored, New Caledonia's players celebrated their defensive efforts by gathering together on the field.
Boxall finally broke through New Caledonia's defence with a header from a corner kick. This marked his first international goal. "When the goal went in I think I was a bit more relieved than anything," Boxall commented. "Fair play to New Caledonia, they made it pretty hard work for us."
Kosta Barbarouses and Elijah Just added two more goals, making the final score appear more decisive than it felt during play. New Zealand became only the second team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. This will be their first appearance since South Africa in 2010.
Boxall expressed determination about their upcoming participation: "Once the World Cup expanded we expected this of ourselves," he stated. "It's not about getting there, it's about what we do when we get there." The team's focus is on making an impact rather than just participating.
