Newcastle United Secure 3-1 Victory At Burnley To End Winless Run

Newcastle United ended a three-game winless run by beating Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor in the Premier League. Joelinton opened the scoring, with Yoane Wissa adding a first-league goal on his debut. The result strengthens Newcastle's position as Burnley remain mired in a prolonged run of form.

Newcastle United eased pressure in the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Burnley, ending a three-match run without victory and deepening Burnley’s troubles. Eddie Howe’s team struck twice inside seven minutes at Turf Moor, survived long spells of Burnley pressure, then sealed the result in stoppage time to leave the hosts without a league win in 10 games.

Burnley’s defensive issues again proved costly. Scott Parker’s side have now conceded 37 goals from 19 Premier League matches in the 2025-26 season. That total is 21 more than the 16 goals allowed across 46 Championship fixtures in 2024-25, underlining the scale of their current problems at the higher level.

Newcastle beat Burnley to end winless run

Newcastle United made a flying start, going ahead after just 65 seconds. Joelinton marked a milestone 200th Premier League appearance with a composed finish, after Anthony Gordon beat Kyle Walker on the left and cut the ball back. The early strike was the fastest goal Burnley have ever conceded in the Premier League.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the sixth minute, with Yoane Wissa scoring on a first top-flight start for Newcastle United. Harvey Barnes and Bruno Guimaraes both saw shots saved by Martin Dubravka, but Wissa reacted quickest to finish from close range. The goal also continued Wissa’s strong record against newly promoted teams.

Burnley responded before the break and reduced the deficit on 23 minutes. Josh Laurent met a flick-on from Armando Broja and volleyed calmly past Nick Pope. Just before half-time, Marcus Edwards almost equalised, only for Fabian Schar to clear off the line after Edwards looked to guide the ball into the corner.

Parker’s players dominated much of the second half, creating several clear chances. Laurent struck the woodwork with one attempt, Loum Tchaouna headed wide from a promising position, and Edwards was denied by Pope when clean through. Burnley pushed forward consistently but lacked a final touch, leaving Newcastle United under pressure but still ahead.

The match was finally settled in stoppage time after a key Burnley mistake. In the third added minute, Martin Dubravka misjudged a situation outside the area, allowing Bruno Guimaraes to reach the loose ball. Guimaraes lifted a calm finish into an unguarded net, confirming three points for Newcastle United and extending Burnley’s winless league run to 10 matches.

Newcastle United vs Burnley Premier League key stats

Joelinton’s goal delivered a notable personal landmark. The Brazilian became only the second player to score for Newcastle United on a 200th Premier League appearance. The first was Alan Shearer, who achieved the feat in March 2003 against Charlton Athletic, further linking Joelinton with one of the club’s leading figures.

Wissa’s impact also stood out from an attacking view. The forward became the 25th Newcastle United player to score on a first Premier League start for the club. Wissa’s goal was also a ninth league strike in eight starts against newly promoted opposition, underlining a consistent record in such fixtures.

Underlying data backed up Newcastle United’s success at Turf Moor. Howe’s side generated 2.01 expected goals, compared with Burnley’s total of 1.06. The visitors were more efficient in both penalty areas, combining early ruthlessness with late composure, while Burnley’s rising goals-against column left Parker facing further questions over a worrying run of league form.
