Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali Delivers Outstanding Performance In EFL Cup Win Over Brentford

Eddie Howe commends Sandro Tonali for his exceptional display after scoring two goals in Newcastle's 3-1 triumph against Brentford in the EFL Cup. The midfielder has regained form following a lengthy ban, showcasing his skills in a deeper role.

Eddie Howe is optimistic about Sandro Tonali's performance at Newcastle United. The midfielder scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Brentford. This win secured Newcastle a spot in the EFL Cup semi-final for the second time in three years. Tonali, who returned from a 10-month ban in August, has been thriving in a deeper midfield role.

Howe expressed his satisfaction with Tonali's contribution, stating, "It was great to see Sandro score the two that he did. We're starting to see the best of him." He noted that Tonali's new position suits him better and highlights his qualities. The Italian international joined Newcastle from Milan in July 2023.

Tonali's performance against Brentford was impressive, with a long-range goal after nine minutes and another before halftime. He had 74 touches and attempted 60 passes, leading both categories in the match. Fabian Schar added a third goal for Newcastle, assisted by Bruno Guimaraes, while Yoane Wissa scored a consolation goal for Brentford.

Howe emphasised the importance of midfield play, saying, "The midfield wins and loses you games." He praised the performances of Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Joe Willock during the match. Their collective efforts were crucial to Newcastle's success on the day.

Brentford have now lost eight of their last nine away games against Newcastle. In this quarter-final clash, they struggled to make an impact. Thomas Frank acknowledged his team's shortcomings, admitting they were outplayed by a superior side on the day.

"We lost on the day to a better team," Frank told Sky Sports. "We can't concede three goals. That's the bit I'm very disappointed with." He stressed the need for improvement if they hope to advance further in future competitions.

Newcastle are now eagerly awaiting Thursday's semi-final draw as they aim to end their long wait for a major trophy since their last triumph 69 years ago.
