Newcastle United secured a significant advantage in the EFL Cup semi-final with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at Emirates Stadium. Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon were the scorers for Eddie Howe's team. Despite early pressure from Arsenal, Isak's goal late in the first half gave Newcastle the lead. Gordon extended their advantage shortly after halftime, leaving Newcastle with a strong position for the second leg.
Arsenal had several chances but failed to capitalise on them. Jurrien Timber missed an early header, setting a pattern of missed opportunities. Gabriel Martinelli came closest when his shot hit the post after beating Martin Dubravka. Newcastle punished Arsenal's wastefulness when Jacob Murphy's touch set up Isak to score off the crossbar in the 38th minute.

With a two-goal lead, Newcastle will host Arsenal at St James' Park on 5 February. Mikel Arteta's side will need to improve significantly to overturn this deficit. Arsenal's struggles continued as David Raya could only parry Isak’s shot into Gordon’s path, who scored easily to make it 2-0 early in the second half.
Kai Havertz and Jorginho both missed crucial chances for Arsenal, failing to reduce the deficit. Havertz missed from close range, while Jorginho fired over the bar. These misses leave Arsenal needing a remarkable comeback in Tyneside next month to keep their cup hopes alive.
Isak’s goal marked his 50th for Newcastle across all competitions since joining in August 2022. Only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have scored more Premier League goals during this period. Isak has been prolific recently, netting ten times in his last nine matches and scoring against Arsenal twice this season.
The Swedish forward is also notable for his partnership with Jacob Murphy, combining for seven goals this season—the highest among Premier League duos. This achievement mirrors Laurent Robert’s feat from 2001-02 when he scored against Arsenal twice in one season.
This victory puts Newcastle in a commanding position as they aim to reach another EFL Cup final after being runners-up in 2023. With their current form and Isak’s scoring prowess, they are well-placed to defend their lead at home against Arsenal.
