Newcastle United Advances To EFL Cup Final After Defeating Arsenal 2-0 At St. James' Park

Newcastle United triumphed over Arsenal with a 2-0 win at St. James' Park, securing a place in the EFL Cup final with a 4-0 aggregate score. Goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon highlighted their performance.

Newcastle United secured a spot in the EFL Cup final with a decisive 2-0 victory over Arsenal at St. James' Park, completing a 4-0 aggregate win. With an advantage from the first leg in early January, goals by Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon confirmed their trip to Wembley. They will face either Liverpool or Tottenham next month.

Alexander Isak nearly calmed the home crowd's nerves early on, scoring within four minutes. However, his goal was disallowed for offside. Martin Odegaard missed a great chance to equalise, which was quickly punished. From a long goal-kick, Isak's one-two with Gordon hit the crossbar, but Murphy converted the rebound.

Newcastle United Defeats Arsenal to Reach Final

Arsenal had dominated the first leg but failed to capitalise on their chances. Despite a recent 5-1 victory over Manchester City boosting their confidence, Mikel Arteta's team struggled to find an opening against Newcastle. The Magpies have not lost an EFL Cup game after scoring first since August 2017.

Leandro Trossard forced Martin Dubravka into a save at the end of the first half, but Arsenal couldn't maintain momentum in the second half due to errors. Gordon intercepted William Saliba deep in Arsenal's half and attempted a long-range shot that went wide with David Raya off his line.

Anthony Gordon capitalised on another mistake when Raya put Declan Rice under pressure. Fabian Schar seized this opportunity, setting up Gordon to score into the left corner. Ethan Nwaneri and Rice had late chances saved as Arsenal's hopes faded.

Though Isak didn't score against Arsenal this season, Gordon added to his tally against them, now having three goals against the Gunners—his joint-most against any club alongside Manchester United.

This victory marks Newcastle's third EFL Cup final appearance, having progressed from all their semi-final ties in this competition. They have won all three home games at this stage and will make their second final appearance in three seasons after losing to Manchester United in 2022-23.

Their previous EFL Cup final appearance was back in 1976. As they prepare for another showdown at Wembley, Newcastle aims to build on their recent successes and secure silverware this time around.
